Mechatronics Automation Design Engineer

Fresh ConsultingBellevue, WA

About The Position

The Associate Mechatronics Automation Design Engineer supports the design, development, build, and deployment of custom automation equipment and manufacturing systems. This role is ideal for an engineer with 1 to 4 years of experience who is building strong fundamentals in mechanical design, robotics, motion systems, controls integration, and machine troubleshooting. Working closely with senior engineers and cross functional teams, this person will contribute to automation projects involving robotics, machine vision, servo systems, pneumatics, sensors, and custom electromechanical assemblies. The Associate Engineer will support design execution, prototype builds, testing, debugging, installation, and customer startup activities while developing deeper technical ownership over time. This role reports to the Director of Automation or a designated engineering manager and is expected to contribute to projects with a strong focus on quality, safety, documentation, and continuous improvement.

Requirements

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Robotics Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related field.
  • 1 to 4 years of relevant experience in automation, machine design, robotics integration, manufacturing engineering, or a similar technical environment.
  • Proficiency with SolidWorks or similar 3D CAD software for part and assembly design.
  • Familiarity with automation hardware such as actuators, motors, gearboxes, linear motion, sensors, pneumatics, and machine guarding.
  • Basic understanding of robotics, servo motion systems, PLC based automation, and industrial controls integration.
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, assembly drawings, wiring diagrams, and technical specifications.
  • Hands on experience assembling, testing, or troubleshooting electromechanical systems.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with good attention to detail and follow through.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills with the ability to work well in a team environment.
  • Competency with Microsoft Office Suite.

Nice To Haves

  • Internship, co-op, or early career experience in industrial automation, special machines, robotics, or manufacturing equipment.
  • Exposure to machine vision systems, industrial cameras, lighting, and inspection applications.
  • Familiarity with PLC, HMI, and motion control platforms such as Allen Bradley, Siemens, Beckhoff, or similar systems.
  • Experience supporting equipment commissioning, debug, or startup in a production or customer environment.
  • Working knowledge of GD&T, tolerance stack ups, basic FEA, and design for manufacturability.
  • Understanding of industrial safety standards and machine risk reduction principles.
  • Experience with BOM management, ECOs, test documentation, and revision control.
  • Basic shop and lab skills including use of common hand tools, measurement tools, and prototype equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Support the design and development of custom automation equipment, fixtures, workstations, and electromechanical systems under the guidance of senior engineers.
  • Create and revise 3D CAD models, detailed drawings, assemblies, and bills of materials for automation and mechatronic systems.
  • Assist with the integration of robotics, machine vision, servo actuators, pneumatic components, sensors, and other automation hardware.
  • Participate in concept development, component selection, design reviews, and design validation activities.
  • Build, test, troubleshoot, and refine prototype and production equipment in the lab and on the manufacturing floor.
  • Support equipment commissioning, factory acceptance testing, site installation, startup, and operator training.
  • Work with controls, electrical, manufacturing, supply chain, and project teams to ensure designs are practical, manufacturable, and aligned with project requirements.
  • Document design changes, test results, issue tracking, and lessons learned in a clear and timely manner.
  • Help identify and resolve mechanical, integration, and system performance issues during development and deployment.
  • Follow company and customer requirements for machine safety, documentation, quality, and regulatory compliance.
  • Support continuous improvement of engineering standards, templates, design practices, and build processes.

Benefits
