Mechanisms Engineer

AST SpaceMobile•Lanham, MD

About The Position

AST SpaceMobile is building a global cellular broadband network in space that operates directly with standard, unmodified mobile devices, for commercial and government applications. The company’s engineers and space scientists are working to eliminate connectivity gaps for mobile subscribers and bring broadband to people who remain unconnected. The Mechanisms Engineer supports the design, development, and optimization of precision mechanical systems for advanced aerospace applications. The role contributes to new product development and ongoing improvements, helping deliver hardware from concept through integration and testing. The ideal candidate is hands-on, innovative, and effective in a fast-paced environment, collaborating across teams to bring complex mechanical systems from design to deployment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related technical field.
  • At least 3 years of experience in mechanical design and analysis, preferably involving complex systems or hardware development.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate across cross-functional teams.
  • Problem-solving mindset and sense of ownership.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Meticulous attention to detail and accuracy in documentation and deliverables.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Experience with industry-standard 3D modeling software such as SolidWorks, Creo, NX, or similar.
  • Familiarity with engineering analysis methods such as finite element analysis (FEA).
  • Experience with PLM/PDM systems.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Project.
  • Ability to work in office and laboratory environments and hands-on with hardware, test setups, and precision instruments.
  • Ability to lift and move up to 25 lbs as needed.
  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods while working on a computer or performing hands-on tasks.
  • Availability for occasional extended hours to support critical project milestones.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • Additional experience in aerospace, space systems, or other high-performance environments.
  • Familiarity with multidisciplinary systems involving electrical or software components.
  • Experience supporting hardware through its full lifecycle, from design through testing and delivery.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop mechanical systems and mechanisms, including conducting analyses and trade studies to optimize performance, efficiency, and manufacturability.
  • Perform detailed engineering design work in accordance with established standards, procedures, and program requirements.
  • Collaborate with internal teams on system integration, assembly, and testing.
  • Work with external vendors to define requirements, review designs, and track development progress.
  • Develop and maintain mechanical documentation, including requirements, drawings, interface definitions, and test procedures.
  • Define and validate mechanical interfaces between subsystems and components.
  • Support qualification testing, including vibration, thermal, and environmental testing, and evaluate results.
  • Troubleshoot hardware issues, conduct root-cause analysis, and implement corrective actions.
  • Present technical findings and design updates during reviews with cross-functional teams and stakeholders.
  • Identify and implement process improvements, new technologies, and innovative design approaches.
