Mechanical Engineer (Mechanisms)

Barrios Technology•Glen Burnie, MD

About The Position

Barrios Technology is seeking a Mechanical Engineer with mechanisms expertise to support commercial spaceflight partners and contribute to space exploration projects. The role leads the design, development, integration, verification, and delivery of mechanisms for spacecraft, mobility systems, payloads, and other spaceflight applications. The engineer may serve as Product Design Lead for assigned hardware, owning requirements, design maturation, procurement, integration, testing, and delivery, and as technical lead for mechanism design activities. Work includes engineering analysis, CAD and documentation, supplier coordination, procurement, and test planning and execution. The role also involves identifying and mitigating technical risks, leading reviews and customer presentations, coordinating with multidisciplinary organizations, and mentoring junior engineers. The position requires a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline and ten years of related engineering experience. Applicants must be U.S. citizens and successfully complete a U.S. government background investigation; eligibility requirements for access to classified information may apply. Work is generally in an office but may involve inside or outside work, test facilities, commuting, and travel to other installations. The position may require sitting for extended periods, lifting and carrying up to 25 pounds, and working outside the normal schedule during peak periods or surges. Regular attendance is critical. A post-offer, pre-employment drug test is a condition of employment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline from an accredited institution.
  • Ten years of related engineering experience.
  • Experience leading the design, development, integration, and testing of mechanisms or electromechanical assemblies through the complete hardware lifecycle, from concept through delivery.
  • Advanced proficiency with CAD modeling software, preferably Creo, and experience with Windchill or similar PLM/configuration management systems.
  • Applied experience with ASME Y14.5 GD&T standards and developing engineering drawings, bills of materials, work orders, assembly procedures, and test documentation.
  • Expertise in mechanism design principles and machine elements, including bearings, geartrains, stepper and brushless DC actuators and motors, lubrication systems, seal systems, release mechanisms, and robotic systems.
  • Experience performing mechanism analyses, including bearing and gear calculations, force and torque margin assessments, tolerance analyses, and dynamic or motion-system evaluations.
  • Experience developing requirements, verification approaches, and performance specifications for mechanical and electromechanical systems.
  • Experience planning and executing functional, vibration, thermal-vacuum, environmental, and life-cycle testing of mechanism hardware.
  • Familiarity with spaceflight hardware procurement, supplier management, manufacturing processes, and delivery of flight or high-reliability hardware.
  • Strong written, verbal, and technical communication skills and the ability to work effectively on multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • U.S. citizenship and successful completion of a U.S. government background investigation.
  • Must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information if subject to a government security investigation.
  • Ability to sit for extended periods, lift and carry up to 25 pounds, and access test-facility areas as necessary.
  • Ability to work outside the normal schedule and adjust schedules to meet peak periods and surge requirements when required.
  • Ability to work in a team atmosphere and demonstrate professional behavior that supports productivity, teamwork, and cooperation.
  • Regular attendance in accordance with the established work schedule.
  • Appropriate grooming and dress that do not impose a safety risk or hazard.
  • Ability to commute and travel to other installations as needed.
  • Must pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.

Nice To Haves

  • Direct experience with spacecraft or spaceflight system development.
  • Demonstrated history leading full-lifecycle mechanism development from design through build, test, qualification, and flight.
  • Experience with motion simulation software and finite element analysis tools such as ANSYS, Simcenter, NASTRAN, or equivalent.
  • Familiarity with lunar or planetary environments, including vacuum, dust, and extreme thermal conditions.
  • Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, development, integration, and verification of mechanisms for spacecraft, mobility systems, payloads, and other spaceflight applications.
  • Serve as Product Design Lead for assigned mechanism hardware, owning requirements, design maturation, procurement, integration, testing, and delivery.
  • Lead mechanism design activities, including bearing selection and analysis, geartrain development, lubrication and seal systems, and actuator integration.
  • Develop performance requirements and specifications for motors, controllers, and other motion-control hardware; support supplier selection, procurement, testing, and characterization.
  • Generate and maintain 3D CAD models, engineering drawings, bills of materials, and related technical documentation using configuration-controlled processes.
  • Perform engineering analyses, including bearing and gear calculations, force and torque margin assessments, tolerance analyses, lubricant life evaluations, optimization studies, interference checks, and dynamic simulations.
  • Maintain mechanism bills of materials, support hardware procurement, and coordinate with suppliers, manufacturers, and internal stakeholders to deliver flight hardware.
  • Develop test plans, procedures, support equipment, and data acquisition systems; execute functional, vibration, thermal-vacuum, environmental, deployment, and life-cycle testing.
  • Identify technical risks, perform trade studies, develop prototypes, troubleshoot hardware issues, and implement mitigation strategies.
  • Lead requirements development, subsystem design reviews, verification planning, and customer presentations.
  • Interface with systems, structures, thermal, avionics, software, manufacturing, and test organizations, and provide technical mentorship to junior engineers.
