About The Position

The Mechanical Technician is responsible for safely performing mechanical repairs, replacing, and/or adjusting heavy industrial equipment such as fans, pumps, gear drives, compressors, etc. Troubleshoot equipment for proper performance and repair, as necessary. Support and participate in the safety, environmental, and quality goals of the plant. This position is part of the Maintenance department reporting directly to the Mechanical Maintenance Supervisor. Based on the results of the Tronox Mechanical Maintenance Skills Test and prior relevant experience, this position offers an hourly rate ranging from $31.78 entry level to $40.42 with a minimum of 5 years of related experience.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Certificate or Associates degree in a related discipline and 1 year of maintenance experience OR successful completion of the Tronox Internship Program OR 3 years mechanical maintenance experience in an industrial environment OR 5 years of production experience at Tronox required.
  • Score 75 or higher on the Mechanical Maintenance Skills Test
  • Professional communication skills
  • Excellent human relationship skills
  • Basic understanding of electrical, hydraulics, pneumatics
  • Strong understanding of general maintenance processes and methods
  • Must be clean-shaven in areas where facial hair would interfere with the proper fit and seal of a respirator. This includes no beards, sideburns, or excessive growth.
  • Occasionally ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, etc. and moving self in different positions to accomplish tasks in various environments
  • Occasionally required to operate heavy machinery, power tools, or motor vehicles
  • Constantly walking long distances from one worksite to another and working in outdoor weather conditions
  • Constantly lifting or moving objects up to 50 or more pounds in all directions

Nice To Haves

  • Internal candidates must have successfully completed the Tronox Maintenance Training Curriculum, have a MX or above on most recent performance evaluation, and no active corrective action.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate general knowledge and use of hand tools. (Drill presses, band saws, welders, torch use, pipe threading machines and precision measuring instruments.)
  • Rebuild, repair, and install all types of rotary equipment such as pumps, fans, valves, filters, gear drives, belt drives
  • Retain knowledge of SOPs for the assigned JQR’s on tasks associated for all Maintenance progressions
  • Must be able to read and repair or fabricate from blueprints
  • Support the callout program and work overtime as required
  • Work swing shift (3p-11p) as required

  • Complete all required courses, certifications, and competency tests as assigned.
  • Perform skilled mechanical maintenance to support safe and reliable plant operations
  • Conduct preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance on rotating and stationary equipment
  • Collaborate with maintenance leadership, operations, and engineering to diagnose and repair mechanical issues
  • Follow site safety procedures, mechanical integrity standards, and maintenance best practices
  • Use precision measurement tools and perform detailed inspections to ensure equipment reliability
  • Perform core mechanical maintenance tasks including precision alignment, belt and sheave alignment, flange makeup, bearing installation, packing installation, tubing makeup, and the use of precision measurement tools to ensure equipment is installed and maintained to specification
  • Train and qualify in specialized mechanical skills, such as crane operation, welding, pipe fitting, machining, fiberglass repair, or equipment specific rebuilds, based on departmental needs
  • Regularly complete all required compliance, safety, and skills training necessary for the role
