About The Position

Nebraska Public Power District has an immediate opening for a Mechanical Technician Intern at Sheldon Station in Hallam, Nebraska. The internship runs from early or mid-May through mid-August 2027. The intern will learn from experienced mechanical technicians in the field and help maintain and repair two turbine-generators, boilers, and related generating-facility systems. The role also involves fabricating parts using machine tools and metallurgy and supporting welding, preventive, corrective, and predictive maintenance at Sheldon Station. A background check, physical, and drug screen must be completed before starting.

The position reports to the Mechanical Maintenance Manager. Travel may be required up to 25%, typically within Nebraska, with no or minimal overnight stays. The amount of travel may vary according to business needs.

Requirements

• Successfully completed two semesters at an accredited institution, majoring in Welding Technology, Electrical/Mechanical Technology, Precision Machining, Automotive Technology, or Diesel Technology.
• Complete a background check, physical, and drug screen before starting.

Responsibilities

• Perform preventive and corrective maintenance and install plant mechanical equipment, including air compressors, pumps, valves, and related systems.
• Maintain chemical and acid systems.
• Maintain equipment records.
• Read precision measuring tools, including micrometers, dial indicators, and laser alignment equipment.
• Perform welding, machining, and fabrication to repair, replace, or add plant equipment.
• Support maintenance and repair of turbine-generators, boilers, and associated generating-facility systems.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
