About The Position

The Fermilab Applied Superconducting and Technology Division (APS-TD) is seeking a Mechanical Technician III to support the Magnet Systems Department. Within the Magnet Technology Department, this role will work in the Accelerator Support Group under general supervision. The position provides technical support for the fabrication, repair, and modification of a variety of accelerator magnets used within the Department of Energy (DOE) complex.

Requirements

HS degree (or technical certificate or equivalent) plus 5+ years of extensive related experience or 3+ years’ experience at a DOE laboratory or in a technical skill of strategic importance to the Lab’s mission (e.g., cryo, radio frequency, radiation protection, clean room, etc.).
Knowledge of efficient safety practices, hand/power tools, mechanical equipment.
Mechanical assembly/disassembly, light fabrication, production and repair of magnets, in accordance with detailed specifications and written procedures.
Knowledge of Windows PC environment and facility with Microsoft Word & Excel applications.
Skills in assembly, fabrication, written & verbal communication, following procedure.
Ability to read engineering drawings, taking measurements during magnet production, and detailing information in electronic written procedures using Windows PCs or iPad.
Ability to safely work independently or in a collaborative team setting under limited supervision.
Ability to assemble/disassemble components per drawings and sketches.
Ability to consistently produce accurate work.
Ability to utilize hand tools & using good judgement in planning work sequence and in selecting tools & instruments.
Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings & manufactures manuals (or similar documents).
Ability to abide by lab policies, protocols, and procedures.
Ability to safe and effective brazing.
Ability to become crane & forklift operator certified.
Ability to lift up to 30 pounds.
Repetitive lifting of moderate weight.
Ability to climb stairs and ladders and stand for up to 4-hours per day.
Ability and willingness to work overtime on short notice in response to operational and emergency requirements.
Ability to legally operate cars and light trucks.
Ability to work mandatory overtime, rotating shift work, and call-ins.
Ability to meet Oxygen Deficiency Hazard (ODH) qualified.
Ability to work with epoxies, solvents, glues, and other chemicals used during magnet fabrication.
Ability to become radiation certified.
Successful completion of a background check and drug screening.
Ability to obtain and maintain a HSPD-12 Personal Identity Verification (PIV) Credential, which requires successfully completing and passing a federal background check investigation.
Ability to produce a REAL-ID, or equivalent, to access the Fermilab Campus for interviews or career events.

Nice To Haves

Experience working in a DOE laboratory environment is preferred.

Responsibilities

Fabricating, assembling, repairing, and modifying a variety of magnets, other Laboratory projects or equipment based on engineering drawings, diagrams, schematics, and written and oral instructions.
Generating, or assisting in generating, Hazard Analyses for work requiring such.
Taking in-process measurements.
Recording work and measurements in electronic forms.
Conducting periodic safety inspections of area of assignment.
Assisting with the identification, packaging, control and disposal of chemical and radioactive waste.
Procuring and maintaining inventories of small parts, supplies, materials, and equipment for area of assignment.
Assisting in the implementation of equipment and systems for the magnet fabrication facility.
Assisting in the design and development of equipment and systems including providing engineering support activities to assigned projects or tasks.
Driving quality in all job aspects.
Assisting and may advise the work of lower-level technicians.
Performing other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Abiding by and being responsible for performing all duties in accordance with all environmental, health and safety regulations, Laboratory policies, procedures and practices pertinent to this position.
