Dewberry has an established national MEPS presence, earning the #35 spot on the MEP Giants list. As Dewberry expands our service offering in Orlando, you will develop the next generation of highly skilled engineers working on challenging projects. This position is based in Dewberry’s Orlando, Florida office, which currently houses over 150 personnel providing transportation, water, land development, and architectural services. From high-performance buildings and healthcare facilities to water and wastewater treatment systems, energy sustainability projects, and resilient microgrids, you’ll help deliver the innovative solutions that have made Dewberry a trusted partner for universities, healthcare systems, utilities, government agencies, and industrial clients nationwide. As a Mechanical Principal Engineer, your primary responsibility will be to oversee the design and specification of HVAC, central utility plant, thermal distribution and other mechanical systems. You will provide mentorship and technical guidance to design staff, including mechanical department managers, engineers, and designers. The Principal Engineer will regularly interface with clients and will team with architectural, electrical, structural, and other disciplines to provide full-range services to our local, regional, and national clients. You will assist business unit management in the development and implementation of growth strategies. In short, you will provide business leadership and technical guidance associated with mechanical engineering to accomplish our project commitments and growth objectives. Requirements

  • Licensed Florida Professional Engineer (P.E.).
  • 20+ years of progressive technical experience in one or more of the following: HVAC system design, central utility plant design, thermal distribution system design (chilled water, steam, heating hot water, etc.), control system design and commissioning.
  • Experience should include technical oversight of multiple concurrent projects.
  • Self-motivated with highly developed verbal, written, and interpersonal skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Active licenses in multiple states, or the ability to obtain additional licenses, is desirable.
  • Experience developing, growing and leading mechanical engineering teams is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Growing, mentoring, and developing the mechanical staff in a way that allows each individual and our collective MEPS team to achieve maximum potential.
  • Ensure mechanical discipline managers are providing timely and adequate guidance and quality oversight, including code review, of all project work involving mechanical engineering.
  • Technical interface with code officials and contractors.
  • Technical training and development of staff related to mechanical engineering.
  • Engineer of Record on select projects as needed.
  • Ensure mechanical discipline managers are providing adequate technical training and development of staff by providing guidance and mentoring of managers.
  • Ensure Mechanical discipline managers are establishing and improving standards, practices, guidelines, and specifications for their Mechanical discipline area. Principal shall lead the development of their office Mechanical standards and coordinate those standards through the Chief Engineer across offices.
  • Ensure mechanical discipline managers are consistently applying and complying with corporate quality management processes and procedures.
  • Active member/leader of local and national technical organizations (e.g. ASHRAE).
  • Provide “on-the-spot” advice and decisions – technical and cost estimates. The principal engineer is the top mechanical engineer in an office.
  • Consultation with clients related to their project goals, design concepts and solutions, and project economics.
  • Evaluation of project opportunities and Go/No Go determination based on technical qualifications, resource availability, and alignment with business strategy and portfolio.
  • Coordinates with client/project managers and department managers within an office to resolve mechanical engineering conflicts.
  • Consultation with senior leadership on development and implementation of growth strategies.
  • Assist the Office/Business Unit Manager to ensure successful office operations, including advice on staff organizational structure and office procedures.
  • Supervise all Mechanical discipline managers within an office or business unit for successful intra-office operations, by actively helping those department managers that report to you smoothly run their departments.
  • Assist the Chief Engineer in leading MEPS Service Line’s Mechanical community of practice to ensure successful inter-office mechanical operations, by actively participating in the community of practice events and performing delegated tasks from the Chief.
