Mechanical Reliability Technician — Steelmaking Operations

United States Steel CorporationGary, IN
Onsite

About The Position

Keep the Mill Moving: A Day in the Life When your 8-hour rotating shift begins, you pick up your work orders and head out across a sprawling steel operation. First stop: a conveyor inspection where you verify lubrication flow and power transmission alignment. Moments later, a call comes in—an overhead crane needs attention. You secure the area, use a pendant controller to position the hook, and diagnose a hydraulic issue. Before lunch, you’ve inspected pneumatics on a production line, swapped a gearbox, and coordinated with operations to bring equipment safely back online. That’s the rhythm of impact for a Mechanical Reliability Technician here. What You’ll Do Install, service, troubleshoot, and repair a broad range of mechanical assets: hydraulic, pneumatic, and lubrication circuits; power transmission assemblies; conveyors; cranes; and other mobile/plant equipment. Operate and handle standard and specialty tools as well as pendant-controlled and overhead cranes and forklifts to complete maintenance work. Partner with production and provide operating assistance when needed to maintain continuous operations. Tackle work at heights and, when required, in confined spaces while following all safety practices. Work independently with minimal supervision or team up with other maintenance technicians depending on the task. Travel through multiple plant areas where conditions may be hot, cold, greasy, wet, dirty, and noisy. Schedule & Work Style 8-hour rotating shifts, including Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays. Overtime as business needs arise. Reliable attendance, punctuality, and self-direction are essential to our operation’s success. What You’ll Bring High School Diploma or GED.
