About The Position

The DCN Mechanical / Piping Engineer will be responsible for supporting management goals and programs, checking and approving drawings, and reviewing engineering work to ensure accuracy and conformance with specifications, codes, and best practices. This role involves attending design and development sessions, preparing technical requisitions, and reviewing vendor quotations. The engineer will also prepare various mechanical engineering deliverables, including drawings, documents, and calculations, and perform bulk Material Take Offs and detailed Bills of Materials. A key aspect of the role is to find innovative solutions to reduce costs while managing impacts on quality, cost, or schedule, and staying informed about new developments in the field. The position requires interpreting and executing assignments independently, making decisions on technical problems, and applying advanced knowledge to resolve complex issues. The engineer will stay updated on advancements in electrical engineering and data center technologies to improve reliability and efficiency, and will specify painting, coating, and insulation systems. They will also determine mounting for components and equipment, advise on industry codes and client specifications, and supervise outsourcing of piping engineering work if necessary. The role includes creating or checking 'Design Basis' documents, performing pipe stress analysis, and providing piping load information to structural engineers. Reviewing 'as-built' drawings and ensuring conformity through calculations is also required. The engineer will represent the company with customers, provide technical support during construction, respond to RFIs, and attend job site visits, meetings, and commissioning activities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering from a recognized university. Other Degrees will be considered (Industrial Engineering, Mechatronics, etc.) but will require increased relevant data center expertise.
  • 2 to 10 years' experience in mechanical design and engineering, with a focus on data center infrastructure.
  • Ability to produce drawings/sketches to illustrate design/ideas.
  • General knowledge and direct experience with the construction, operation, and maintenance of data centers or mechanical systems and components.
  • Strong knowledge in piping and fire suppression system design and construction.
  • Knowledge of industry standards, codes, and regulations.
  • Experience working with computer-aided design (CAD) and building information modeling (BIM) software.
  • Detailed understanding of chillers, cooling towers, direct and indirect evaporative cooling, mechanical control systems, fan systems, acoustics, pumps, vessels, valves, coolers, and other critical mechanical equipment and systems found within data centers.
  • Basic understanding of electrical equipment and system design within data center driving or affecting mechanical scope.
  • Direct experience in negotiating with regulatory agencies regarding departures from code and ultimately achieving design approval and permitting.

Responsibilities

  • Support the goals and programs established by the management team.
  • Check and approve drawings, information and documentation which meets Industrial standards and code to enable the manufacturing group and other departments to produce Data Center Infrastructure Modules.
  • Review and monitor Engineering work, as required, to assure accuracy and conformance with Client and / or Company Specifications, governing codes, good engineering practices, good safety practices, project procedures, and job requirements.
  • Attend and initiate Design and Development Planning and Review sessions to meet customer's and industry's needs.
  • Prepare Technical Requisitions for mechanical systems and various components.
  • Review vendor quotations and provide feedback to procurement team.
  • Prepare and complete various mechanical engineering deliverable drawings, documents, and calculations such as valve list, equipment lists, piping line list, piping stress / flexibility study, line sizing of pipe, mechanical equipment data sheets, etc.
  • Prepare bulk Material Take Offs and detailed Bills of Materials.
  • Think outside of the box to find creative and innovative solutions to reduce costs while managing impact to quality, cost, or schedule.
  • Stay informed of new developments and requirements affecting the organization for the purpose of recommending changes in programs and applications.
  • Interpret, organize, execute assignments in a self-driven and self-sufficient manner.
  • Make decisions independently on technical problems and methods and represent the organization in meetings to resolve important questions.
  • Apply advanced or state-of-the-art knowledge and experience to resolve crucial issues and/or unique conditions.
  • Stay up to date with advancements in electrical engineering and data center technologies and recommend new technologies to improve the reliability and efficiency of our data center product line.
  • Select / Specify proper painting and coating systems for various items within data centers.
  • Select and design piping insulation where and as needed.
  • Determine brackets, fastening, bolting, and / or mounting of components and major equipment.
  • Advise and assist project and discipline engineers with the interpretation and clarification of applicable industry Codes and Client Specification requirements.
  • Supervise outsourcing of piping engineering work if necessary.
  • Create or check 'Design Basis' document specific to the project.
  • Perform or check pipe stress analysis with all applicable design loads and design combinations in accordance with the 'Design Basis'.
  • Provide piping load information to structural engineer.
  • Review 'as-built' drawings and re-run or check calculations, as required, to ensure conformity.
  • Represent the company with customers during review meetings.
  • Provide technical support during the construction phase, responding to RFIs and addressing any issues that arise.
  • Attend job site visits, project meetings, and commissioning activities as needed.
