About The Position

This role will support the mechanical design of optical instruments in space and/or tactical environments. The mechanical design engineers work with in cross-disciplined teams of various sizes to deliver the solutions our customers rely on. The Engineering, Science and Analysis (ESA) Strategic Capabilities Unit comprises the technical talent and organizational leadership that enables the successful delivery of high-impact discriminating technologies for our customers’ missions. Requirements

  • BS degree or higher in Engineering or a related technical field is required plus 2 or more years related experience.
  • Each higher-level degree, i.e., Master’s Degree or Ph.D., may substitute for two years of experience.
  • Related technical experience may be considered in lieu of education.
  • Degree must be from a university, college, or school which is accredited by an agency recognized by the US Secretary of Education, US Department of Education.
  • Proficient in SolidWorks or equivalent 3D CAD software.
  • Solid interpersonal communication skills.
  • Solid presentation skills.
  • The applicant must be willing and eligible for submission, depending on program requirements, after an offer is accepted and must be able to maintain the applicable clearance/access.

Responsibilities

  • Support the design effort for optical payloads from proposal phase thru award which can include detailed design, fabrication, assembly, test, requirement verification, and sustaining engineering.
  • Design of optical payload components including benches, optical elements and mounts, light baffles, etc.
  • Maintain awareness of cost and schedule planning and tracking as well as managing efforts through robust engineering change processes including risk and opportunity management.
  • Work on CAD and support cross-functional analyses (STOP and other related analyses) over the full development lifecycle.
  • Potential to grow into position of leading 1-2 design and analysis engineers; mentoring of less experienced engineers is encouraged and expected.
  • Coordination required with personnel from all other payload sub-systems and spacecraft structure, including external interfaces such as customers, customer consultants, sub-system providers and launch vehicle providers.
  • Collaboration with systems engineering and program leadership.
  • Maintain a regular and predictable work schedule.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships within the department, the Strategic Business Units, Strategic Capabilities Units and the Company. Interact appropriately with others in order to maintain a positive and productive work environment.
