About The Position

The Central Arizona Project (CAP) is seeking an experienced Mechanical or Senior Mechanical Maintenance Engineer to join their Maintenance Engineering Department. This role is crucial for ensuring the reliability, availability, and maintenance of CAP's extensive infrastructure, including pumping plants, water conveyance systems, and facilities. The engineer will be responsible for quickly restoring system failures to an operable condition, improving maintenance efficiency, and developing maintenance procedures and repair scopes of work. This position offers the opportunity to work with diverse equipment, stay current with new technologies, and lead maintenance teams and vendors for significant overhaul activities. The role involves advanced troubleshooting, asset condition monitoring, and recommending equipment modifications or upgrades.

Requirements

  • For the Engineer position: Bachelor of Science degree (or higher) in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field.
  • Five (5) years total Mechanical Engineering experience.
  • Advanced degree or other related experience may substitute for up to two years of Mechanical Engineering experience.
  • For the Senior Engineer position: Bachelor of Science degree (or higher) in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field.
  • Eight (8) years total Mechanical Engineering experience and one of the following certifications or licenses: Registered Professional Engineer OR Certified Maintenance and Reliability Professional.
  • Twelve (12) years total Mechanical Engineering experience is required if none of the certifications above are held.
  • Advanced degree or other related experience may substitute for up to two years of Mechanical Engineering experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform all of the items listed below – Advanced Troubleshooting of CAP Specific Equipment, Development of Complex Scopes of Work, Mean Time to Repair Efficiency, Equipment Maintenance Plan, Equipment Condition Assessment, Lead Overhaul and Major Outage Repairs.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and maintain a good driving record.
  • This is a safety-sensitive position and requires physical testing.

Responsibilities

  • Provide maintenance engineering services as a member of an asset management team responsible for the reliability, availability, and maintenance of pumping plants, water conveyance systems and facilities for the Central Arizona Project (CAP).
  • Utilize technical expertise, field experience, and knowledge of equipment to lead the effort to continually improve mean time to repair (MTTR) methods and efficiency.
  • Lead the development of maintenance task procedures of CAP equipment.
  • Develop and refine repair scopes of work based on technical standards and industry best practices.
  • Engage with other entities and professional societies to stay current on trends and new technologies related to equipment restoration and repair.
  • Lead and direct maintenance teams and vendors for large outage and overhaul activities utilizing experience and equipment knowledge.
  • Provide engineering support and restoration activities for Large Vertical Centrifugal Pumps and Turbines, Valves, Cooling Water Systems, Radial and Sluice Gates, Hydraulic Systems, Overhead Cranes, Fire Suppression and Detection Systems, HVAC, Auxiliary Water Systems, Facilities, Backup Power Generator Sets, and other Auxiliary Systems.
  • Support the development and administration of an integrated maintenance program for all CAP facilities that incorporates industry best practices.
  • Develop, review, and modify maintenance procedures, guidelines and schedules for electrical, mechanical, civil, and other equipment and structures. Write and adjust procedures and frequencies as necessary. Provide standardization in procedures and frequencies.
  • Develop and support execution of complex maintenance equipment repair scopes of work, including but not limited to equipment overhauls, breakdown and corrective repairs, and replacements in kind (RIK).
  • Provide support to maintenance groups in assessing and advanced troubleshooting plant and canal equipment to restore to an operable state working to reduce Mean Time to Repair (MTTR).
  • Perform Asset Condition Monitoring (ACM) and equipment condition assessment data collection activities in the field and report findings using various reporting methods and software.
  • Analyze data and utilize it to make decisions regarding required repairs and recommendations for overhaul or replacement.
  • Develop ACM program and new testing methods to ensure reliability and availability of critical assets.
  • Develops bill of materials and recommends spare parts inventories for critical assets.
  • Make budget recommendations based on asset condition.
  • Recommend modifications or upgrades to equipment based on operating and maintenance histories when justified by expected performance improvements.
  • Provide work direction to contractors, craftsmen, and other assigned personnel through the appropriate supervision or as required.
  • Mentor junior-level maintenance engineers.
