  • Bachelors’ Degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or Mechatronic Engineering.
  • 3 or more years of experience designing mechanical and/or electrical devices / components / systems such as traction drive inverters, DC/DC converters or other electronics for automotive, aerospace or industrial applications.
  • Intermediate CAD skills.
  • Understanding of vibration, heat transfer, material fatigue, statics & dynamics, fluid dynamics, material properties (metallic, polymeric and elastomeric).
  • Basic knowledge of ASME Y14.5-1994 or 2018 Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) standard and 2D/3D tolerance stack up analysis.
  • Experience in design for manufacturing (DFM) of metal castings, machining, sheet metal forming, plastic injection molding, liquid dispense dosing.
  • Experience in design for modern mass-production part assembly processes.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Onshape (preferred). Solidworks, CATIA V5, or equivalent CAD software accepted.
  • Experience with Enovia PLM / SmarTeam / Team Center PDM Systems preferred. Experience with other modern PLM systems (e.g. Windchill) are accepted equivalents.
  • Basic understanding of automotive powertrains internal combustion engines (and turbochargers), fuel cells, electric vehicles.
  • Basic understanding of industrial refrigeration systems and refrigeration compressors.
  • Basic knowledge of mechatronic systems, experience working with PCBA, power electronics and high voltage systems a plus.
  • Knowledge and experience with FEA (Finite Element Analysis).
  • Experience with fluid flow and dynamics and CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics).
  • Experience with thermal design and simulation (CHT).
  • Experience with APQP, PPAP, DFMEA & problem solving techniques.
  • Six Sigma or Lean certified
  • Team player with a positive attitude and a willingness to support other teams when called upon.
  • Ability to coordinate detail design activities with local and global teams.

Responsibilities

  • Work in a fast-paced environment with competing requirements and challenging deadlines.
  • Work with Lead Designers to manage project milestones, scope changes & supplier issues affecting designs.
  • Collaborate with team members locally and at Garrett’s other global development centers.
  • Travel to external labs or other facilities to oversee prototype component testing or assembly.
  • Own all aspects of the design including the 3D model, 2D drawings, Bill of Material, component stack-up analysis, validation results, assembly instructions, process controls, and quality controls.
  • Work cross-functionally with other engineering teams to understand requirements, voice-of-the-customer, packaging restrictions, and performance targets, translating them into a conceptual design.
  • Collaborate with Design Engineers to develop a 3D model from scratch to a full production inverter using OnShape cloud-based CAD.
  • Convert the 3D model into 2D drawings and implement full GD&T in preparation for procurement.
  • Work with component suppliers to source proto hardware and solve quality and technical challenges.
  • Collaborate with local and global resources to assemble fully functional units, including hands-on assembly, debugging, and testing.
  • Execute various mechanical and thermal simulations on the design, collaborating with Materials & Structures team FEA and CFD/CHT experts to solve engineering problems and tradeoffs.
  • Work closely with the Electrical Engineering Hardware team to package complex, high voltage, high power PCBA into sealed housings exposed to high temperatures and punishing vibrations, with a strong focus on built-in quality.
  • Design complex parts and assemblies applying Design for Manufacturing (DFM), cost, and reliability fundamentals.
  • Make design decisions based on engineering and cost tradeoffs for all components of an inverter, including aluminum die casting parts, injection molding parts, 3D printing, sheet metal forming, welding, soldering, adhesives, liquid-cooled systems, seals and gaskets, electrical contacts, and busbars.
  • Justify design decisions with supporting evidence including calculations, simulations, and empirical testing.
