About The Position

Hill International is seeking a Mechanical Inspector in Los Angeles, California. This role involves inspecting the construction of a wide variety of airport improvements and utilities projects to ensure conformance to plans, specifications, contracts, permits, environmental documents, and agreements for work. The inspector will conduct comprehensive daily inspections of mechanical and plumbing systems across building and terminal construction projects, ensuring compliance with applicable codes and project specifications. This includes reviewing and interpreting construction documents such as blueprints, shop drawings, submittals, RFIs, and change orders. A key responsibility is preparing detailed daily inspection reports that document all observed construction activities, tracking progress, and identifying issues, deficiencies, or safety concerns in a timely manner. The inspector will verify contractor compliance with local and national mechanical and plumbing codes, and LAWA-specific standards, track and document time-and-material work, field changes, and job quantities, and assist in validating contractor progress payment requests. Support for special inspections and testing activities, including coordination with engineers, contractors, and third-party agencies, is also required. Specific inspections include domestic water and sewage systems, venting, fire sprinklers, gas piping, HVAC systems, smoke control systems, mechanical ventilation and exhaust, fire and life safety integration, mechanical and plumbing shutdowns, commissioning and balancing reports, underground utilities, and fire life safety systems.

Requirements

High school diploma (or equivalent)
3 years or more experience performing mechanical inspections for Building Construction.
Thorough knowledge of the materials and methods used in the installation of plumbing, heating, air conditioning and refrigeration installations.
Current ICC Certification as a Commercial Mechanical Inspector
Proof of Cal-OSHA 30 hr. training within the last 4 years
Fall protection and harness training.

Nice To Haves

Additional Current ICC certification as a Commercial Plumbing Inspector
NFPA 70E standards training within the last 3 years.
Plumbing experience (journeyman/master level) with progression into inspection.
Experience inspecting mechanical systems of large-scale commercial, industrial or public buildings.
Confined Space Entry Training
Experience overseeing and ensuring compliance with building codes and regulations on significant construction projects.
Involvement in complex projects that require coordination with multiple stakeholders, including contractors, engineers, and city officials.
Expertise in identifying and addressing deficiencies, ensuring that all aspects of construction meet the required standards.

Responsibilities

Conduct comprehensive daily inspections of mechanical and plumbing systems across building and terminal construction projects, ensuring compliance with applicable codes and project specifications, review and interpret construction documents including blueprints and shop drawings, submittits, RFIs, and change orders.
Demonstrates strong proficiency in preparing comprehensive daily inspection reports that clearly document the WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE, and HOW of all observed construction activities, ensuring accuracy, clarity, and accountability in tracking progress and identifying issues, deficiencies, or safety concerns in a timely manner.
Verify contractor compliance with local and national mechanical and plumbing codes, and LAWA-specific standards.
Track and document time-and-material work, field changes, and job quantities
Assist in validating contractor progress payment requests based on an approved schedule of values.
Support special inspections and testing activities, coordinating with engineers, contractors, and third-party agencies as needed.
Perform inspections of Mechanical and Plumbing installations including, but not limited to: Domestic Water and Sewage Systems, Venting, fire sprinklers, and gas piping, HVAC systems (air handlers, chillers, boilers, ductwork), Smoke Control Systems, Mechanical ventilation and exhaust, Fire and life safety integration (e.g. smoke dampers), Mechanical and plumbing shutdowns, lockout / tagout procedures, Commissioning and balancing reports, Underground utilities, Fire life safety systems including smoke/heat detectors and FM-200 suppression systems.
