About The Position

The purpose of this job is to perform inspections for compliance with Municipal, State, and National codes and identify defects and potential hazards. Performs residential and commercial mechanical inspections. Consults with engineers, architects, developers, contractors, owners, and the general public. Inspects complicated institutional and commercial projects. Leads, trains, advises, and assists staff with questions and major projects.

Requirements

  • High School diploma --AND-- At least six (6) years of progressively responsible experience in mechanical systems work, or code enforcement experience --OR-- Any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities
  • Mechanical contractor license or required 6 years of experience as defined in the Skilled Trade Regulation Rules.
  • Must obtain State Mechanical Inspector Registration or the ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire.
  • Knowledge of Applicable software applications (Microsoft Office Suite - Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, HRIS, etc.)
  • Knowledge of Principles and practices of basic bookkeeping
  • Knowledge of Modern office procedures, methods and computer equipment
  • Skill in The principles and practices of mechanical equipment and systems construction
  • Skill in The methods, materials and techniques used in mechanical equipment systems
  • Skill in The various codes to be enforced
  • Skill in Mechanical code and enforcement procedures
  • Skill in Principles and practices of basic bookkeeping
  • Skill in Modern office procedures, methods and computer equipment
  • Ability to Interpret more complex code intentions
  • Ability to Enforce codes
  • Ability to Maintain records and prepare reports

Responsibilities

  • Inspects mechanical installations to verify compliance with the Michigan Residential code, Michigan mechanical code and International fuel gas code.
  • Plans, guides and coordinates inspections with subordinate inspectors.
  • Consults with engineers, builders, contractors, owners and other city departments regarding the provisions of the codes, ordinances, laws and design criteria and requirements.
  • Makes decisions about code interpretations.
  • Reviews applications and construction plans.
  • Makes recommendations on remodeling issues.
  • Works with contractors and inspectors on final inspections, problems and permits.
  • Issues corrective orders and written violations notices to contractors and owners.
  • Prepares cases for court appearances when required.
  • Reviews permit applications, issues permits, and collects fees from builders, contractors and homeowners.
  • Reviews plans for equipment installations for new construction and existing structures or for repairs in industrial, commercial and residential buildings.
  • Oversees maintenance of mechanical license and permit records.
  • Prepares reports on inspection activities.
  • Schedules inspections.
  • Responds to questions and complaints.
  • Prepares cases for court enforcement.
  • Testifies in court.
  • Attends code update meetings for continuing education with building group, mechanical group, and local inspectors’ association.
  • Performs related work as required.
