About The Position

Enforces the Eaton County Mechanical Code by reviewing plans for proposed projects and performing inspections during construction. Processes and investigates all mechanical code violations. Provides information on the codes to builders, architects, and homeowners. Assists the Prosecutor's Office with case preparation for all legal action required to enforce the mechanical code.

Requirements

  • Registered as a Mechanical Inspector and a plan Reviewer in the State of Michigan or be able to become provisionally certified as a mechanical inspector.
  • 4 years of experience in 1 or more of the work classifications defined in the provisions of Act No. 192 of the Public Acts of 1984, as amended, being 338.971 et seq. of the Michigan Compiled Laws, and known as the Forbes Mechanical Contractors Act.
  • 2 of the 4 years of experience shall have been at Journeyman level or higher.
  • Must have a valid Michigan Driver's License and a good driving record.
  • Provide a copy of current State Mechanical Contractors License.

Nice To Haves

  • One year previous experience as a Mechanical Inspector preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts inspections of mechanical construction for new and retro fit projects for compliance with the Eaton County Mechanical Code, including single family, multiple family, commercial, and industrial projects.
  • Conducts plan reviews of proposed projects, verifying code compliance on plans and specifications.
  • Processes correction notices/violations, issues stop work orders, and oversees the enforcement process from discovery of a violation through legal action and final corrections.
  • Reviews all permit applications for compliance with State and County codes, including contractor information, contracts, work specified, and correct fees.
  • Answers code questions from the general public, contractors, architects, and local governmental units, providing information on appeal processes, inspection procedures, and contractor complaints.
  • Investigates contractor/owner disputes alleging code violations or workmanship problems and prepares reports for the State of Michigan, Department of Consumer & Industry Services, and testifies at hearings.
  • Assists the Prosecutor in preparing legal proceedings against persons violating the mechanical code and serves as the County's expert witness.
  • Serves as staff for the Construction Code Board of Appeals, as requested, and prepares background reports for the Board.
  • Assists with the processing and filing of permits and inspection records.
  • Performs administrative and general office duties as needed.
