About The Position

U. S. Steel Tubular Products manufactures seamless pipe and premium connections that support energy and industrial customers across the United States. The Summer 2027 Mechanical / Industrial Engineering Intern will support operations-focused projects while gaining hands-on experience in a manufacturing environment at our Fairfield, Alabama plant. Interns will work directly with operations, maintenance, engineering, and production teams to improve safety, quality, productivity, reliability, and process performance. This role requires a willingness to spend significant time in the plant, observing processes, gathering data, and collaborating with frontline employees to implement improvements.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Industrial Engineering.
  • Returning to school following completion of the Summer 2027 internship.
  • Willingness to work in a manufacturing environment and spend time in operational areas of the facility.
  • Strong analytical, communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to work onsite at the assigned location.
  • Candidates must be full-time students pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's Degree.
  • Candidates must have completed their sophomore year by June 2027 and be in good academic standing.
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship.

Responsibilities

  • Follow all safety requirements and actively support a safe work environment.
  • Participate in operations improvement projects focused on production efficiency, quality, cost, reliability, and throughput.
  • Work directly with operators, maintenance personnel, and engineers to understand manufacturing processes and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Collect, analyze, and interpret operational and production data to support decision-making.
  • Observe and document current work practices, process flows, and equipment performance.
  • Assist in troubleshooting operational challenges and developing practical solutions.
  • Support continuous improvement and Lean manufacturing initiatives.
  • Prepare project recommendations, reports, and final presentations for leadership.
  • Participate in intern development activities, site events, and networking opportunities.
