About The Position

National Grid is investing in the UK's electricity transmission network by expanding and modernizing substations. This role is for a Mechanical Fitter who will contribute to maintaining critical infrastructure and support the country's future energy needs. The position involves structured on-the-job training, including National Grid's Safe Ways of Working programme, to ensure safe and confident work on the electricity transmission network. The role is based within a 30-minute commute of Taunton or Bridgwater, with regular travel across the Somerset area. The Mechanical Fitter will support maintenance activities at substations, gaining broad experience on critical electricity infrastructure. This hands-on, mechanically biased engineering role focuses on maintaining, repairing, and overhauling equipment essential for the safe and efficient operation of National Grid's Electricity Transmission substations. The work is predominantly outdoors, often at height on a mobile platform, and includes a variety of maintenance tasks. The company provides industry-leading training at its Eakring Training Centre, supplemented by practical site learning, to develop expertise in high-voltage engineering. Training may involve occasional overnight stays, with allowances provided. Some weekend work is required, with paid overtime available.

Requirements

  • A recognised apprenticeship in Mechanical engineering, or an NVQ/Level 3 Mechanical engineering qualification with relevant fitting experience.
  • Strong mechanical maintenance, overhaul or installation experience.
  • Experience stripping, rebuilding and repairing plant and equipment.
  • Confidence using hand tools, power tools, precision measuring equipment and torque tools.
  • A proactive approach to fault finding and problem solving.
  • A strong commitment to safe working practices and can work at height.
  • A full UK driving licence.
  • Confidence using a computer and iPad.
  • You live within approximately 30 minutes to Taunton and Bridgewater.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working on high-voltage equipment
  • Previous experience within power generation, utilities, manufacturing, heavy engineering or process industries
  • NEBOSH or IOSH qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Stripping, inspecting and rebuilding mechanical components
  • Diagnosing faults and carrying out repairs
  • Replacing worn and ageing components including bearings, seals, fasteners and moving parts
  • Installing new or refurbished equipment
  • Supporting planned maintenance and emergency breakdown response
  • Performing routine inspections and condition monitoring
  • Working on specialist equipment including circuit breakers, power transformers, high-speed on-load tap changers, air compressor systems, and ancillary equipment across high-voltage substations.
