About The Position

Air Squared Manufacturing, Inc. is an OEM manufacturer of scroll type compressors, vacuum pumps and expanders for the medical, aerospace, fuel cell and power generation industries. Air Squared offers exciting career opportunities working on projects including NASA MOXIE, Leading Electric and Autonomous Vehicle OEM, DOE Clean Energy initiatives ranging from nuclear fusion and the Advanced Research Projects Agency - Energy (ARPA-e), and other cutting-edge projects. We are seeking a Mechanical Engineering Testing Intern who is curious, hands-on, organized, and detail-oriented, and who thrives in a collaborative team environment. The internship is ideal for students pursuing a B.S. or M.S. in Mechanical Engineering, with junior or senior standing preferred. Scroll compressors integrate multiple mechanical engineering disciplines, giving you the opportunity to apply coursework in: Heat transfer (thermal management and heat dissipation), Thermodynamics (compression process, efficiency, discharge temperature), Mechanics of materials (strength, durability, material selection), Dynamics & statics (bearing loads, shaft deflection, balancing), Fluid dynamics (flow/pressure drop; exposure to CFD is a plus). This job will include assisting in the design and testing of new scroll compressors and vacuum pump designs. This includes detailing the design to be ready for manufacturing as well as producing necessary documentation for the machine shop.

  • SolidWorks experience (parts, assemblies, and drawings)
  • Comfortable working hands-on in a lab/shop environment and following safety procedures
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, and clear written communication
  • LabVIEW experience (operation and/or basic programming)

Nice To Haves

  • Exposure to CAE tools such as FEA and/or CFD
  • Working knowledge of GD&T
  • Familiarity with basic electronics lab equipment (oscilloscopes, mutimeters, DC poser supplies)
  • GPA 3.5+ and/or strong references from instructors/employers

Responsibilities

  • Support test stand design and build activities, including fittings, valves, plumbing, sensors and equipment selection and installation
  • Create and update CAD models and drawings in SolidWorks for test fixtures and prototype hardware
  • Assist with prototype testing and troubleshooting of scroll compressors and vacuum pumps
  • Test individual components for mechanical performance and document results
  • Support electronics testing and troubleshooting, including PCB bench testing, motor controller evaluation, and basic use of oscilloscopes, multimeters, and power supplies
  • Set up and calibrate sensors and support data collection
  • Produce clear documentation for the machine shop and test lab, including procedures, build notes, and test summaries
