About The Position

As a Summer Intern in Mechanical Design Engineering, you will participate in designing, building, and testing portions of the EUV lithography light source and associated metrology. You will work on subsystems involving robotics, mechatronics, precision mechanics, and/or opto-mechanics. The work spans understanding functional requirements and deriving specifications through concept development, engineering analysis, prototyping, detailed CAD design, supplier coordination, system integration, and testing. Internship project responsibilities may be partially determined by the candidate’s interests and background. Other duties may be assigned, and the job description may change at any time. The role is intended for a candidate pursuing a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD in Mechanical Engineering who has completed at least two years of study. Candidates should have a strong background in mechanical design and engineering, exposure to mechanical design fundamentals and 3D solid modeling, and basic experience with analytical techniques including first-principles engineering equations and finite element analysis. The position requires effective written and oral communication in English. The position requires access to controlled technology under the Export Administration Regulations. Qualified candidates must be legally authorized to access this technology before starting work; business needs may require ASML to proceed with candidates who are immediately eligible. ASML is an Equal Opportunity Employer and values a diverse and inclusive workforce.

Requirements

  • Be pursuing a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering and have completed at least two years.
  • Have a strong background in mechanical design and engineering.
  • Have exposure to kinematics, dynamics, material properties and behavior, and structural analysis.
  • Have experience with 3D solid modeling for design conceptualization and realization.
  • Have basic experience with mechanical analytical techniques, including first-principles engineering equations and finite element analysis of stress, strain, deformation, and modal response.
  • Demonstrate the ability to draw conclusions from analysis and make practical recommendations.
  • Communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing.
  • Demonstrate strong technical writing, communication, and presentation skills.
  • Interface effectively with multidisciplinary groups, including senior leadership.
  • Be a self-motivated team player with a strong desire to learn, and demonstrate ownership and commitment to timely results.
  • Be able to learn and apply new information or skills and interpret data, information, and documents.
  • Demonstrate customer focus and commitment to customer satisfaction through prioritization, quality, efficiency, and professionalism.
  • Complete assignments with attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy.
  • Perform effectively in a demanding environment with changing workloads.
  • Identify bottlenecks and drive improvements; work independently or as part of a team and follow through with minimal supervision.
  • Communicate openly, clearly, concisely, and professionally and maintain cooperative working relationships.
  • Work according to procedures and timelines.
  • Be legally authorized to access controlled technology before beginning work.

Nice To Haves

  • A background in mechanical design of mechatronics, precision design, or complex optical systems.
  • Good intuition for complex mechanical systems.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and document mechanical designs for EUV test systems from concept through completion and testing.
  • Work with the project lead engineer to develop, analyze, and fabricate components and assemblies.
  • Create mechanical system and subsystem specifications that meet performance requirements.
  • Create detailed CAD drawings for manufacturing.
  • Analyze and select materials and verify design accuracy.
  • Define test plans, perform testing, and write test reports.
  • Present and document concepts, designs, test results, and evaluations.
  • Calculate mechanical tolerance stack-ups, particularly as they affect optical alignment.
  • Analyze the mechanical and thermal stability of optical assemblies using FEA and other analytical tools.
  • Contribute to alignment and assembly processes for optical instruments.
  • Collaborate with Optics, Systems, and other engineering groups on optical subassembly design.
  • Collaborate with vendors on fabrication of mechanical parts, mechanisms, and optics.
  • Read optical and/or mechanical drawings.
  • Collect and document mechanical engineering best practices.
