About The Position

The Mechanical Engineering Project Manager manages and coordinates tasks within larger construction, maintenance, and/or rehabilitation for airport HVAC, plumbing, and fire protection projects at Charlotte Douglas International Airport. This position will perform the functions of a planning/design engineer and provide technical assistance to various projects in related disciplines.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Level Degree - Engineering plus three years
  • Bachelor’s degree with 3 years of relevant experience with coursework in mechanical engineering.
  • Senior experience in mechanical, plumbing, and/or fire protection planning, design, and construction.
  • Valid driver’s license with no more than 6 points, with the ability to obtain and maintain a city driving permit.
  • Knowledge of: Building design and construction principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of: Architectural and building infrastructure standards, including construction documents, building codes, technical specifications, and project closeout documents.
  • Knowledge of: Building Information Modeling (BIM) via Autodesk Revit.
  • Knowledge of: Design drafting and modeling via Autodesk AutoCAD.
  • Knowledge of: Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Advisory Circulars, Engineering Briefs, and Federal Aviation Regulations as they pertain to airfields and airport facilities.
  • Knowledge of: Transportation Security Administration (TSA) security regulations and requirements.
  • Knowledge of: Modern engineering methods and techniques as applied to the construction and maintenance of public works and utilities.
  • Knowledge of: Local, state, and federal regulations as they pertain to Airport issues.
  • Skill in: Utilizing interpersonal communication as necessary to develop and maintain effective and appropriate working relationships.
  • Skill in: Simultaneously managing a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another.
  • Skill in: Performing basic mathematical functions such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, and ratios.
  • Skill in: Providing excellent customer service.
  • Skill in: Troubleshooting and problem-solving techniques.
  • Ability to: Successfully perform project management tasks, including proactive management during project initiation, planning, implementation, and closeout.

  • Ability to: Perform difficult and complex engineering mathematical computations, to make estimates and compile moderately complex engineering data and statistics.

  • Ability to: Deal tactfully and courteously with the public, representing the airport in a positive manner.
  • Ability to: Supervise and inspect the work of contractors on engineering projects in the field or office, and to obtain adherence to plans and specifications.

  • Must be able to traverse a wide variety of active construction sites that may include exposure to machinery, moving objects/vehicles, scaffolds, and ladders.
  • Works both inside and outside, with possible exposure to inclement weather.
  • May also include exposure to dust, slippery, uneven surfaces, noise, and vibrating tools.
  • Works alone as necessary.
  • Physical Requirements: Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining physical conditions necessary for sitting, standing, climbing, or walking for extended periods of time.
  • Physical Requirements: Light to moderate lifting and carrying; some crouching, stooping, squatting, crawling, reaching, pushing, and pulling when performing tasks.
  • Physical Requirements: Adequate vision, hearing, and speech required.
  • Sensory Requirements: Concentrated and attentive use of one or more senses (visual, audio, and other sensory modalities) for proofreading, data entry, and tabulating data.
  • Sensory Requirements: Ability to operate in an environment with frequent interruptions from people and or noises, which in return could result in some level of stress, fatigue, or strain.

Nice To Haves

  • Prefer knowledge of Airport facilities and environment.
  • North Carolina Professional Engineer (P.E.) license is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate with the Infrastructure/Utilities Senior Design Manager to implement and review mechanical engineering standards, policies, and procedures appropriate for an airport environment.
  • Provide interpretations of mechanical, plumbing, and fire protection codes, standards, and regulations.
  • Manage on-call contracted consultants to ensure timely and quality delivery of services: Coordinate service providers to schedule work activities.
  • Monitor project status and inspect completed work to ensure compliance with contract documents (cost, schedule, and quality of work).
  • Provide direct administrative and technical support for larger capital improvement program projects.
  • Compile and analyze data necessary to monitor project budgets and expenditures.
  • Apply for and maintain required permits.
  • Perform inspections to ensure compliance with design specifications and all regulatory requirements.
  • Provide technical engineering input for estimating and bid proposal requirements.
  • Assist with operations and controls of existing mechanical and plumbing systems as needed.
  • Review HVAC systems and controls to ensure a high level of service for daily operations.
  • Advise HVAC and BAS technicians on technical solutions and best practices.
  • Coordinate and/or perform tasks related to the programming and planning phases of projects.
  • Coordinate and/or perform tasks related to the process for bidding and contracting of services of various project components in conjunction with Airport contracts.
  • Coordinate and/or perform tasks related to design and/or construction phases: Attend regular project progress meetings.
  • Work with consultants, contractors, and work crews to resolve problems and initiate the appropriate solutions.
  • Prepare and review construction and engineering plans, designs, and specifications.
  • Perform other mechanical engineering-related duties as required.
