About The Position

The Mechanical Design Manager is responsible for leading a team of mechanical design engineers in the development, execution, and support of mechanical designs for electrical switchgear and power distribution products. This role combines people leadership, technical oversight, customer engagement, and cross-functional collaboration to ensure engineering deliverables meet Vertiv standards for quality, safety, cost, schedule, and customer expectations. The position supports Engineered-to-Order (ETO) programs and plays a key role in driving standardized engineering cycle times, regulatory compliance, and continuous improvement aligned with Vertiv’s strategic priorities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related engineering discipline
  • Demonstrated experience managing and leading an engineering team, including responsibility for performance management, coaching, and employee development.
  • Demonstrated working experience supporting mechanical designs compliant with UL 891, UL 1558, and applicable NEC requirements.
  • Prior hands-on experience in mechanical design engineering within a manufacturing or industrial environment.
  • Experience supporting customer-facing engineering discussions, technical reviews, or design clarifications.
  • Experience supporting electrical switchgear, power distribution equipment, or engineered-to-order industrial products.
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD tools (SolidWorks preferred; Creo or Inventor acceptable).
  • Working knowledge of BOM creation, manufacturing drawings, and PLM systems.
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical, and decision-making skills.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to present technical information to customers.
  • Ability to manage priorities, resources, and schedules in a dynamic ETO environment.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, manage, mentor, and develop a team of mechanical design engineers.
  • Establish clear objectives, priorities, and performance expectations aligned with business needs and departmental KPIs.
  • Conduct performance reviews, provide coaching, and support employee development, engagement, and retention.
  • Promote accountability, teamwork, and a high-performance culture aligned with Vertiv behaviors and values.
  • Provide technical leadership and oversight of mechanical design activities, including 3D models, assemblies, manufacturing drawings, and Bills of Material (BOMs).
  • Review and approve mechanical designs to ensure compliance with applicable industry standards (UL 891, UL 1558) and internal Vertiv engineering, safety, and manufacturing requirements.
  • Ensure mechanical designs align with applicable certification requirements and internal design standards.
  • Enforce consistent application of approved design processes, documentation control, and PLM governance across all mechanical programs.
  • Lead design validation activities and drive timely resolution of technical issues to improve product performance, quality, safety, and manufacturability.
  • Provide technical guidance and decision-making support to engineers throughout the design lifecycle, from concept through production release.
  • Own and drive standard engineering cycle-time KPIs, ensuring mechanical design deliverables are completed within established targets.
  • Monitor workload, resource capacity, and priorities to maintain predictable, repeatable engineering execution.
  • Participate in customer-facing meetings and technical review calls to clarify requirements, address design questions, support submittals, and resolve issues.
  • Represent Mechanical Engineering in discussions with customers, consultants, and internal stakeholders.
  • Partner with Electrical Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, Supply Chain, and Program Management to deliver ETO projects on time and within scope.
  • Support project setup, execution, and data accuracy within ERP and PLM systems.
  • Provide technical support to manufacturing, service, and field teams as required.
  • Drive standardization of mechanical designs, documentation, and engineering best practices to improve ETO execution.
  • Identify and implement process improvements to improve cycle time, quality, first-pass yield, and customer satisfaction.
  • Support Vertiv’s safety, quality, and regulatory compliance initiatives.
