About The Position

The Mechanical Engineering Intern will support the design, documentation, and continuous improvement of custom busbar systems and associated electromechanical products used in critical power infrastructure applications. This position provides hands-on experience in an engineered-to-order (ETO) environment where every customer solution is uniquely designed and manufactured. Working alongside experienced mechanical engineers, technical engineers, manufacturing personnel, and project teams, the intern will gain practical exposure to product design, CAD modeling, engineering documentation, product lifecycle management, manufacturing processes, and continuous improvement initiatives. This internship is designed to provide meaningful engineering experience through project ownership, technical mentorship, and direct involvement in real-world engineering activities.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering Technology from an accredited university.
  • Completion of sophomore year or higher.
  • Basic knowledge of engineering fundamentals including: Statics, Mechanics of Materials, Manufacturing Processes, Machine Design.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with SolidWorks or similar 3D CAD software.
  • Exposure to engineering drawings and GD&T.
  • Familiarity with manufacturing processes such as: Sheet metal fabrication, Machining, Welding, Assembly operations.
  • Experience with engineering projects, internships, Formula SAE, robotics, or design competitions.
  • GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Responsibilities

  • Assist mechanical engineers in the creation and modification of 3D models, assemblies, and manufacturing drawings using SolidWorks.
  • Support engineering change requests and drawing revisions.
  • Learn and apply company drafting standards and best practices.
  • Participate in design reviews and peer review activities.
  • Assist with creation and maintenance of Bills of Materials (BOMs).
  • Support engineering documentation activities within PLM and ERP systems.
  • Verify engineering documentation for completeness and accuracy.
  • Organize and maintain engineering files and design records.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing, quality, and supply chain teams to resolve production-related issues.
  • Participate in first-of-a-kind (FOAK) builds and product launch activities.
  • Observe fabrication, assembly, and testing processes to understand design-for-manufacturability principles.
  • Assist in documenting lessons learned and process improvements.
  • Participate in Lean and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Help standardize engineering processes, templates, and design libraries.
  • Develop tools or documentation that improve engineering efficiency and quality.
  • Complete a defined internship project with measurable business impact.
  • Attend engineering team meetings, design reviews, and technical discussions.
  • Present project progress updates to engineering leadership.
  • Deliver a final presentation summarizing accomplishments, recommendations, and key learnings.
