Required to obtain and maintain a Security Clearance at the NATO Secret Level. Position Summary We have a current vacancy for a Mechanical Engineering Coop. Thales Canada is seeking a motivated Engineering student for a 8 to 12-month internship/coop (starting September 2026) with the AOPS and JSS In-Service Support (AJISS) program. As Mechanical Engineering Coop Student, you will support critical engineering activities for Royal Canadian Navy vessels while gaining valuable experience in marine and mechanical engineering and regulatory compliance. This role offers a unique opportunity to develop professional skills on one of Canada's premier defense projects while working alongside experienced engineers and technical specialists. Working under the supervision of experienced engineers and technical specialists, the student will contribute to the implementation of Engineering Changes to the AOPS class, and the continuous improvement of engineering processes and documentation. This role provides practical exposure to naval sustainment operations, real-world regulatory frameworks, and cross-discipline engineering collaboration within a complex in-service support environment.

Requirements

  • 3rd or 4th year Mechanical or Marine Engineering Student, enrolled in a Bachelor of Engineering Program in a Canadian University.
  • English (Essential)
  • Requires direct or indirect access to hardware, software, technology or technical data controlled under the Canadian Export Control List, the ITAR or the EAR.
  • Requires a positive Controlled Goods assessment as personnel will have direct access to hardware, software, technology or technical data controlled under the Canadian Controlled Goods Program.
  • Required to obtain and maintain a Security Clearance at the NATO Secret Level.

Responsibilities

  • Assist engineers in analyzing defects, compiling technical information, and supporting progress toward resolution, including specification writing.
  • Help organize, validate, and improve the accuracy and usability of technical documentation and TDP information.
  • Contribute to the preparation and coordination of documentation required for Engineering Changes, Deviations, and Waivers.
  • Conduct detailed mechanical engineering tasks, including: Requirements analysis; Design calculations; CAD drafting; Material compatibility investigation; Research and review of equipment/system maintenance documentation; Risk and hazard assessments; Assure compliance with Classification Society, Naval Ship Code and Polar Code requirements
  • Assist with gathering and relaying technical information between Thales teams, ship staff, and external partners.
  • Develop knowledge of naval sustainment practices while working under the guidance of experienced engineers.
