Mechanical Engineering Contractor

Innovative Computer Solutions Group•San Diego, CA
•Onsite

About The Position

The Mechanical Engineering Contractor will design ruggedized, mobile communication products intended for use in extreme environments. The position is in San Diego. The engineer will design IP-rated enclosures, plastic parts, die castings, sheet metal parts, and other mechanical components using 3D CAD, preferably PTC Creo 8 or later, and create detailed drawings for prototypes, fabrication, and tooling. The role also involves hands-on prototype fabrication and assembly, mechanical analysis, thermal and structural simulations using finite element analysis, design verification testing, and supporting designs through final production. The engineer will work on lightweight mechanical structures for drone aviation, EMI/RFI shielding, and interfaces between electrical board and mechanical designs. Additional work includes design reviews and presentations, reports, bills of materials, cost analysis, and coordination with vendors. Compensation is $105.00 per hour.

Requirements

  • BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Experience with 3D CAD systems such as Creo or SolidWorks.
  • Strong theoretical background in mechanics of systems, solid mechanics, and heat transfer.
  • Experience using finite element analysis tools.
  • At least 5 years of experience.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work well on a team.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident (Green Card holder).

Responsibilities

  • Design ruggedized IP-rated enclosures, seals, and gaskets to meet IP54 and above ingress protection.
  • Design plastic parts for injection molding; metal parts for die casting; sheet metal parts for stamping and fabrication; and CNC-machined parts using a 3D CAD system such as PTC Creo 8 or later.
  • Fabricate and assemble prototype parts using rapid prototyping methods such as 3D printing, SLA, CNC, and prototype tooling.
  • Generate detailed drawings for PCBs, board assemblies, EMI shields, enclosure mechanical parts, cable assemblies, and fabrication and tooling.
  • Analyze mechanical systems and assemblies for structural integrity using classical static and dynamic calculations.
  • Design lightweight mechanical structures for drone aviation using magnesium casting.
  • Perform heat transfer calculations using basic heat transfer equations.
  • Perform thermal and structural simulations using finite element analysis software to optimize size and weight.
  • Design for manufacturability and assembly (DFMA).
  • Perform design verification testing using vibration, shock, and temperature-cycle profiles from standards such as MIL-STD-810.
  • Design for EMI and RFI shielding using techniques such as robotically placed shield cans, EMI gaskets, and housing metallization.
  • Analyze 3D CAD interfaces between electrical board design (ECAD) and mechanical design (MCAD) to check for component interference.
  • Create board constraint inputs for electrical board design.
  • Generate reports, give presentations, and conduct design reviews.
  • Create bills of materials and perform cost analysis.
  • Take responsibility for bringing mechanical designs from prototype to final production by working with and managing vendors.
