The Pittsburgh office of SmithGroup is looking for Mechanical Engineering undergraduate students for a full-time cooperative education position within our Power, Utilities and Infrastructure team. The goal of the co-op program is for students to complete three full-time work rotations that alternate with academic semesters, providing progressive hands-on engineering experience with thermal infrastructure systems while working toward their degree.

Requirements

  • Completed at least their sophomore year in an accredited mechanical or architectural engineering program by the time the first rotation begins.
  • Experience with AutoCAD, Revit, and/or IESVE, and the Microsoft Office Suite.

Responsibilities

  • Work on integrated architecture and engineering project design teams.
  • Assist in the design of HVAC, piping, plumbing and/or fire protection systems in Revit 3D modeling software.
  • Perform project specific calculations such as heating and cooling load calculations using IESVE.
  • Perform pressure drop calculations for air and hydronic systems.
  • Assist in equipment sizing and selection.
  • Participate in energy modeling, life cycle cost analysis, and the evaluation and implementation of sustainable design concepts.
  • Participate in design meetings.
  • Receive mentorship from experienced engineers.
  • Visit a construction site(s) and/or completed project sites.
  • Responsibilities will continually increase with successive rotations.
