About The Position

Dominion Energy is seeking a Mechanical Engineer for the VC Summer Nuclear station. This role can be filled at the Engineer, Senior Engineer, or Staff Engineer level, depending on the candidate's qualifications. The Mechanical Engineers are responsible for the design and modification of nuclear power plant systems, structures, and components, as well as maintaining the plant's design and licensing bases. This position provides engineering support in a designated company area or specific engineering discipline, performing and reviewing engineering calculations, analysis, research, and design. It also involves cost analysis and developing recommendations for management review. The role requires the application of engineering skills with increasing complexity and independence as the level increases. The engineer may also serve as a member of the Emergency Response Organization (ERO), responding to plant ERO activities within a specified timeframe.

Requirements

  • 2+ years of relevant engineering experience (Engineer level)
  • 5+ years of relevant engineering experience (Senior Engineer level)
  • 8+ years of relevant engineering experience (Staff Engineer level)
  • Knowledge and application of engineering theories and principles, concepts, and fundamentals.
  • Requires developmental experience in a professional engineering position.
  • Competency in applying engineering principles, fundamental concepts, practices and procedures requiring some evaluation, originality and/or ingenuity to achieve project objectives.
  • Understands and can apply knowledge of configuration management.
  • Ability to perform engineering calculations using applicable software programs (e.g. Matlab, Excel, etc.).
  • Planning, organizational and project management skills.
  • Ability to develop and exercise leadership skills.
  • Effective decision making skills.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills (includes technical writing).

  • Experience or knowledge in any of the following is desired: Large Rotating equipment, piping systems, heat exchangers, pressure systems, pumps, valves and ASME standards.
  • Possess a 4-year Engineering degree from an ABET accredited Engineering program based on the year that the Engineering program was accredited by ABET, or Possess a 4-year Engineering degree from an institution outside of the U.S. which is accredited through the country's own Engineering accrediting body under the Washington Accord as a full signatory, and is a degree that was recognized by the country's accrediting body on or after the date that full signatory status was achieved, or Possess a 4-year degree in Engineering (non-ABET accredited), Physics, Chemistry, Math or Engineering Technology and a post-graduate Engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same Engineering discipline is ABET-accredited based on the year the Engineering program was accredited by ABET, or Holds or has previously held a valid U.S. Professional Engineer license.
  • Bachelor’s in Engineering (equivalency not accepted in lieu of required degree).
  • Related experience which shall include 2 years; Nuclear power plant experience to include 1 year (ANSI/ANS-3.1-2014, Section 4.6.1).

Nice To Haves

  • Prior nuclear plant experience is preferred, but not required.
  • An Engineering PhD can be substituted for up to 5 years’ experience based on research engineering work on related projects approved by executive leadership (for Staff Engineer level).

Responsibilities

  • Design and modification of nuclear power plant systems, structures, and components.
  • Maintenance of the plant design and licensing bases.
  • Performs and/or reviews engineering calculations, analysis, research and design.
  • Provides cost analysis as needed and develops recommendations based on calculations (e.g. cost for equipment upgrade for management review).
  • Exercises independence in evaluating, selecting and applying standard or well defined engineering techniques, procedures and criteria.
  • Uses independent judgment in prioritizing and making moderately complex adaptations and modifications.
  • Perform other duties as requested or assigned.
  • May serve as a member of the Emergency Response Organization (ERO), responding to plant ERO activities in 30-60 minutes.
