This role researches, plans, designs, and analyzes mechanical and electromechanical products and systems, and directs and coordinates activities involved in fabrication, operation, application, installation, and repair of mechanical or electromechanical products and systems used in industrial applications. The position will at times be required to lead small engineering teams (3-5 engineers), providing technical leadership, oversight, and direction, and will be the primary interface to the Program Manager and/or lead project engineer. The role applies knowledge of engineering principles to design products such as automated industrial systems and equipment, engines, instruments, controls, robots, machines, mechanisms, pressure vessels, process piping systems, and gloveboxes. Proficiency with 3D modeling software like SolidWorks, preparing hand calculations, and performing thermal, stress, and structural analyses using FEA tools like ANSYS or equivalent is required. Performing kinematic and kinetic analyses using multibody dynamics simulation software such as Adams Hexagon is a strong plus. The role is required to prepare or oversee the preparation of designs for manufacture (DFM). Works on complex issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors, relying on extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected to determine methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria for obtaining results. Networks with key contacts outside own area of expertise. Determines critical methods and procedures on new assignments and may coordinate activities of other personnel. Primarily works on the design of systems and equipment that support the DOE and commercial nuclear, including Advanced Reactor or Small Modular Reactor (Generation III, III + and Generation IV), fusion reactor, and nuclear fuel processing markets.
