Internship - Mechanical Engineer

ASML•Wilton, CT
•Onsite

About The Position

ASML’s Mechanical Development department designs and develops the precision mechanics used in lithography machines. This Summer Intern position is based on-site in Wilton, Connecticut, where ASML has R&D and manufacturing operations. The team designs and produces subsystem modules that are shipped to ASML’s headquarters in Veldhoven, Netherlands, for integration into complete lithography machines. The intern will contribute to developing portions of lithography systems and associated tooling, potentially involving robotics, mechatronics, precision mechanics, and opto-mechanics. Working with design engineers and system architects on a multidisciplinary project team, the intern will help translate functional requirements into specifications; develop concepts; perform engineering analysis; build and test prototypes; create CAD designs and engineering drawings; work with suppliers; and support system integration and testing. The position requires on-site attendance for work-related events, training, and meetings. Candidates must be available for 12 weeks, beginning on either June 2, 2027, or June 14, 2027. A flexible workplace arrangement of up to two remote days per week may be available for roles conducive to remote work, though this position is identified as on-site. The role involves work in a fast-paced office and may also involve cleanroom or laboratory work. Cleanroom work requires wearing protective clothing and equipment and following ISO 9000/14000 standards. The cleanroom environment has moderate temperatures and moderate to high noise levels. Work may involve exposure to lasers, ladders, platforms, chemicals, strong magnetic fields, and high voltage and currents. Travel may be required based on business needs, up to approximately 10%.

Requirements

  • Be pursuing a Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering, with at least one year of the degree program completed.
  • Be available for 12 weeks starting June 2, 2027, or June 14, 2027.
  • Communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing.
  • Have a strong background in mechanical design and engineering.
  • Be able to interface with multidisciplinary groups, including senior leadership.
  • Demonstrate self-motivation, teamwork, a desire to learn, leadership potential, ownership, and commitment to timely results.
  • Be able to learn and apply new information or skills and read and interpret data, information, and documents.
  • Demonstrate customer focus and commitment to customer satisfaction through prioritization, quality, efficiency, and professionalism.
  • Complete assignments accurately and with attention to detail.
  • Perform effectively in a demanding environment with changing workloads; demonstrate accountability and drive improvements.
  • Work independently or as part of a team, follow through with minimal supervision, and work according to procedures and timelines.
  • Communicate openly, clearly, concisely, and professionally and maintain cooperative working relationships.
  • Be able to observe and respond to people and situations and interact with others encountered in the course of work.
  • Meet the described physical requirements, including occasionally lifting or moving up to 20 pounds.
  • Be willing to work in a cleanroom environment when needed and wear required protective clothing and equipment.

Nice To Haves

  • Background in mechanical design of mechatronics, precision design, or complex optical systems.
  • Strong intuition for complex mechanical systems.
  • Exposure to kinematics, dynamics, material properties and behavior, and structural analysis.
  • Experience with 3D solid modeling for design conceptualization and realization.
  • Basic experience with mechanical analytical techniques, including first-principles engineering equations and finite element analysis of stress, strain, deformation, and modal response.
  • Ability to draw conclusions from analysis and make practical recommendations.
  • Strong technical writing, communication, and presentation skills.

Responsibilities

  • Help develop portions of lithography systems and associated tooling.
  • Collaborate with design engineers and system architects on a multidisciplinary project team.
  • Understand functional requirements and derive specifications.
  • Develop design concepts and perform engineering analysis.
  • Build and test prototypes.
  • Create detailed CAD designs and engineering drawings.
  • Partner with suppliers.
  • Support system integration and testing.
  • Perform other functions as assigned.
