Mechanical Engineer (Spector)

VeecoTown of Oyster Bay, NY
$97,500 - $123,500Onsite

About The Position

Veeco designs, develops, manufactures, and services highly complex, cutting-edge machines used by customers to create essential devices for the digital age. The company is seeking a Mechanical Engineer for its Plainview, NY facility, focusing on the Spector® ion beam sputtering platform and related systems for semiconductor, data storage, and photonics applications. This role involves designing critical components such as vacuum chambers, ion beam sources, fixture assemblies, and motion systems to meet stringent performance standards. The engineer's decisions directly impact Veeco's success in qualifying its equipment with major chipmakers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering with at least 5 years of related design experience, or a Master's degree with at least 3 years of experience designing mechanical components or subassemblies for complex equipment.
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks, Inventor, PTC Creo (formerly Pro/ENGINEER), or a comparable 3D computer-aided design (CAD) platform.
  • Demonstrated practical experience building, testing, and troubleshooting electromechanical hardware.

Nice To Haves

  • Semiconductor capital equipment design experience, particularly with vacuum chambers, wafer handling fixtures, precision motion stages, or thermal management subsystems.
  • Experience designing for ultra-high-vacuum and nanometer-scale process environments.
  • Structural and thermal finite element analysis (FEA) experience, including setting up, running, and interpreting simulations in ANSYS, SolidWorks Simulation, or a comparable tool.
  • Familiarity with SAP or a comparable product lifecycle management (PLM) system.
  • Knowledge of ion beam physics, vacuum system design, or thin-film deposition processes.
  • Understanding of industrial control systems, including instrumentation, automation, and motor selection.
  • Familiarity with SEMI standards and their influence on mechanical design decisions.
  • Skilled at communicating engineering trade-offs clearly in formal reviews and on the factory floor.

Responsibilities

  • Own mechanical design of components and subassemblies for ion beam and vacuum process equipment from concept through production release, making trade-off decisions across performance, reliability, cost, and manufacturability.
  • Solve analytical problems spanning multiple engineering disciplines (vacuum vessel integrity, heat transfer, structural loading, fluid dynamics, precision motion) and translate calculations into design choices.
  • Translate customer and application requirements into mechanical specifications that drive system performance, considering process conditions like low-pressure operation and high-energy sputtering.
  • Lead and contribute to design reviews, presenting trade-off analyses, prototype test data, and risk assessments to cross-functional teams, and close action items.
  • Build and execute structured test plans and Design of Experiments (DOE) for engineering prototypes, turning test data into clear design improvements.
  • Work alongside manufacturing and assembly technicians on the factory floor, troubleshooting build issues, conducting root-cause analysis, and feeding lessons learned back into the design.
  • Drive engineering deliverables through every stage of the product life cycle, owning phase-gate readiness and maintaining documentation through the Engineering Change Order (ECO) process.
