Mechanical Engineer

Applied MaterialsSanta Clara, CA
Onsite

About The Position

Applied Materials is looking for a Mechanical Engineer who is an effective problem solver and system thinker. In this role, you will own the end‑to‑end design, development, and validation of hardware required to enable Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) processes. As a Mechanical Engineer, you will develop technical solutions by generating root‑cause hypotheses, brainstorming design concepts as part of a cross‑functional team and performing hands‑on testing to validate solutions. You will be instrumental in enabling key technologies and developing equipment that powers the next generation of advanced semiconductor chips and displays used in Artificial Intelligence and Augmented Reality applications.

Requirements

  • PhD or Master’s degree in mechanical engineering with 4–7 years of applicable experience
  • Experience in semiconductor equipment design or troubleshooting.
  • Proficiency with 3D CAD tools such as Siemens NX, Creo (Pro/ENGINEER), or SolidWorks
  • Demonstrated strength in at least one technical domain: thermal engineering, compressible flow, mechanical design, or machining/manufacturing processes.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to create clear, concise engineering documentation.
  • Proven ability to build effective cross‑functional relationships and communicate technical concepts to non‑experts.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects in a fast‑paced product development environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with engineering analysis tools (e.g., ANSYS, CFD‑ACE, COMSOL) is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Technically lead engineering projects and own end‑to‑end execution, delivering complete solutions for technical problems of varying complexity.
  • Deconstruct on‑wafer performance requirements into clear engineering design requirements and collaborate with different engineering disciples like Process Engineering team to develop solutions that meet or exceed those requirements.
  • Identify design tradeoffs and technical risks, evaluate alternatives, and select the optimal path to solution.
  • Perform engineering analyses (e.g., tolerance, thermal, structural, flow) to demonstrate designs will meet functional and performance objectives.
  • Work with internal subject‑matter experts and external suppliers to design systems and components that achieve performance, reliability, and manufacturability requirements.
  • Plan and execute structured experiments and validation tests to characterize performance, establish operating windows, and define design margins.
  • Analyze experimental and field data using tools such as JMP and Microsoft Excel to identify trends, assess statistical significance, and draw sound engineering conclusions.
  • Validate solutions using first‑principles hand calculations and simulation tools (e.g., FEA / CFD), correlating analytical predictions with test results.
  • Prepare and deliver technical presentations to cross‑functional teams, management, and customers.
  • Create, specify, review, and release engineering documentation in Teamcenter, ensuring accuracy and configuration control across the product lifecycle.

Benefits

  • supportive work culture that encourages you to learn, develop, and grow your career
  • comprehensive benefits package
  • participation in a bonus and a stock award program, as applicable
