About The Position

Nova Space Solutions (NSS) is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to join our Engineering Services Department team at NASA Michoud Assembly Facility, Louisiana. The ideal candidate will assist in the design and analysis of new site or modifications to existing site or manufacturing and production facility systems. Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from an ABET accredited university.
  • Working knowledge of HVAC fluid components such as valves, regulators, and fittings.
  • Knowledge of fabrication, integration processes and quality control relative to tubes/piping, ductwork, and machined components.
  • Working knowledge of materials and treatments.
  • 3-10+ years’ experience working with mechanical design principles and practices. Knowledge of and application of current industry standards, such as, but not limited to: ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code Section VIII, ASME B31.3 Process Piping, ASHRAE 90.1, International Building Code, etc.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen to obtain required NASA badge.
  • Must be able to provide a certified Birth Certificate (with state seal), Passport, or INS Citizenship documents on date of hire (candidate will be sent home if this paperwork is not provided upon arrival on date of hire).
  • Must have the ability to communicate the English language, both verbally and written, in an effective manner.
  • Must have, and maintain, a valid driver’s license.
  • Good organizational and planning skills.
  • Good Communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently but follow specific detailed instructions.
  • Ability to interface with various levels of personnel in a multi-cultural, team- oriented environment.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) is required.

Nice To Haves

  • MS degree in mechanical engineering a plus.
  • Active professional engineer (PE) licensure registered in the state of LA, a plus.
  • Experience in design of piping systems; knowledge of process piping standards (ASME B31.3) and pressure vessel codes (ASME BPVC Section VIII) is a plus.
  • Experience with cryogenic and process piping and large-scale HVAC systems for office and production areas.
  • Prior knowledge of NASA site, experienced with working on government installations preferred.
  • Experience with Flowmaster, MathCad, PipeFlo, and CAD.

Responsibilities

  • Development of mechanical designs for construction of new or modification to existing facilities, site utilities, process piping, and HVAC systems- office and industrial process related.
  • Develop process and instrumentation drawings to reflect process and HVAC related systems.
  • Monitor and report weekly on the status of all current design projects, design schedule and actual cost.
  • Prepare plans and specifications in conjunction with other project team members for construction packages.
  • Participation in the entire design cycle including conceptual design, analysis, integration, and construction support.
  • Designing and routing individual HVAC or fluid subsystems (i.e. pressurization, pneumatics, discharge, and capture) including discrepancy resolution.
  • Designing fluid component groups (i.e. solenoid valves, regulators, pressure vessels) including specification, procurement, processing, and discrepancy resolution of specific components.
  • Prepare plans and drawings using design software. Performs various analyses, including dimensional, thermal, integration, etc. to assist in the identification of correct configuration, integrity, and feasibility of design(s).
  • Project planning, scheduling, and cost estimation.
  • Develop heat load analysis models, flow models, etc. as required for the design of facility systems. Systems include but are not limited to: Cryogenic and gas systems.
  • Review of vendor/contractor submittmits, Requests for Information (RFIs) and change orders to bring product design from engineering phase through completed construction.
  • Perform trade studies and conceptual design studies to support site-wide improvements.
  • Assist other departments as needed with engineering support.
