Mechanical Engineer Entry Level

ACCRETECH SBS, INC•Portland, OR
•$65,000 - $75,000

About The Position

ACCRETECH SBS, Inc. is a world leader in automatic balancing and process control solutions for grinding machines. The company designs, manufactures, and markets the SBS system for in-process dynamic balancing of precision grinding machines. The Mechanical Engineer’s primary role is application engineering: understanding customer needs and designing custom parts and assemblies. This involves preparing drawings for customers and machinists, building prototypes for testing, and creating production instructions and tooling. The role also supports ongoing product and manufacturing improvement, including redesigning parts to improve performance and reduce costs, creating fixtures, improving processes, and resolving problems. The position involves designing and modifying custom parts, assemblies, and detailed drawings; validating designs through analysis and testing; building prototypes and tooling; researching and sourcing components; and maintaining organized engineering project data. The employee may also perform other related duties assigned by management.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • Up to 3 years of relevant experience, including internships, co-ops, academic projects, or part-time work.
  • Hands-on project experience in a manufacturing or R&D environment.
  • Proficiency with 3D CAD software for designing parts, assemblies, and detailed drawings.
  • Solid understanding of Design for Manufacturability (DFM), particularly for traditional machining and FDM 3D printing.
  • Working knowledge of the scientific method, experimental design, data collection, and analytical evaluation.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills, including the ability to manage competing priorities, adapt to changing workflows, and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly convey technical concepts to diverse audiences.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience using Autodesk Inventor.
  • Practical experience with basic hand tools and shop equipment.
  • Manual machining experience, including milling and lathe operations.
  • Exposure to product development, prototyping, testing, or manufacturing process improvement projects.

Responsibilities

  • Design and modify custom parts, assemblies, and detailed engineering drawings using 3D CAD software to meet customer and application requirements.
  • Apply dimensional tolerances to drawings, considering part fit, tolerance stack-up, GD&T, and practical manufacturing limits.
  • Interpret and synthesize technical drawings, customer emails, reference images, and specifications to develop engineering solutions.
  • Validate and verify mechanical designs using simulation tools, hand calculations, and physical prototype testing.
  • Design and conduct engineering experiments; collect and analyze data to evaluate part performance and guide design decisions.
  • Build, test, and rework prototypes and custom production tooling using hand tools, soldering irons, and shop equipment, including mills and lathes.
  • Improve products and manufacturing by designing fixtures, creating production instructions, and redesigning legacy parts for manufacturability and cost-efficiency.
  • Research, specify, and source off-the-shelf components, hardware, and tooling for assemblies and production workflows.
  • Organize project files, manage part setups, and document revisions in company software according to established guidelines.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by management.
