Mechanical Engineer - Modular Manufacturing

Atlantic Constructors•Richmond, VA

About The Position

Atlantic Constructors is seeking an experienced, Virginia-licensed Professional Engineer for its Modular Manufacturing Department. The role performs full engineering duties on smaller to mid-size modular projects and provides supplemental engineering support to commercial construction and industrial departments. The engineer works with minimal supervision, makes independent decisions, and may contribute to design, design-assist projects, RFI proposals, and value-engineering selections. The position reports to Fabrication management and may involve field project work and coordination with the Virtual Design & Construction (VDC) department for modeling. The role develops mechanical designs and construction documents, selects and lays out equipment, coordinates ductwork and piping, performs calculations, researches and evaluates design proposals and products, and supports project administration. It also contributes to the technical development of junior personnel and works with senior leadership to grow the mechanical practice. This position has a mixed office and field environment. Field visits may involve open, noisy, dusty, or physically demanding construction and industrial sites, including work at heights, in confined spaces, and in containment areas. The employee must be available to work assigned schedules. Infrequent travel may be required.

Requirements

  • Current Professional Engineering license in Virginia; North Carolina and Maryland licensure is a plus.
  • Five years of experience in a commercial construction environment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to pass background checks.
  • Experience using Autodesk software, including Revit, Revit with Fabrication CAD MEP parts, and Navisworks.
  • Strong experience performing engineering calculations and developing and implementing HVAC, mechanical utility, and piping system designs with limited supervision.
  • Experience performing load calculations using design software.
  • Experience with computational fluid dynamics software.
  • Experience calculating tolerances, dimensions, and thermal analyses.
  • Experience with mechanical and plumbing codes.
  • Knowledge of ASHRAE standards, the International Building Code, and pertinent NFPA publications related to mechanical systems.
  • Competency with MS Excel, MS Word, and Bluebeam.
  • Ability to pass a pre-offer pre-employment drug screen and any additional required background checks, which may include DMV and criminal-history checks.
  • Valid driver's license, good driving record, and insurance, because the position may involve access to company vehicles.
  • Ability to adhere to company policies and procedures.
  • Ability to work assigned schedules and perform the physical demands of site inspections, which may include climbing ladders, riding lifts, entering containment areas, and working at heights or in confined spaces; respirator use may be required.

Nice To Haves

  • Professional Engineer licensure in North Carolina or Maryland.
  • Experience with MS Project or other scheduling software tools.
  • Familiarity with PDF editing software such as Bluebeam or Adobe.
  • Familiarity with cloud-based project management software.
  • Prior military experience.

Responsibilities

  • Work independently with latitude for decision-making and inform managers about workload, scope changes, and additional services.
  • Communicate mechanical system selections, applicable codes and guidelines, sustainable design considerations, and interdisciplinary coordination needs to project stakeholders.
  • Develop construction drawing packages and write construction specifications for intermediate projects of limited complexity.
  • Model facility components, including MEP FP and structural components, using industry software.
  • Select and lay out mechanical equipment, including pumps, chillers, fans, and boilers.
  • Design and coordinate ductwork and piping systems; lay out mechanical equipment rooms; perform load calculations; and provide construction administration services.
  • Research and analyze customer proposals, specifications, manuals, and other data to assess design feasibility and cost.
  • Research, design, and evaluate mechanical products, equipment, systems, and processes to meet requirements.
  • Support development of designs, specifications, system narratives, and system layouts for projects of varying sizes.
  • Review engineering proposals, drawings, specifications, and technical submissions, and recommend improvements or changes.
  • Prepare supporting materials for project change requests or information requests in coordination with the Project Manager.
  • Assist with technical training and skill development for junior personnel.
  • Conduct field surveys of existing conditions to support design development and system recommendations.
  • Work with senior leadership to grow the mechanical practice.
