The Mechanical Engineer will research, design, and develop mechanical systems for U.S. Navy submarines and carriers in support of design and construction. This role combines technical engineering with hands-on field support, requiring collaboration with shipyard trades and engineering teams to ensure all systems meet safety, quality, cost, and schedule requirements. Positions will support the following areas within the Engineering, Technology, and Design Division – Design and Construction of Virginia and Columbia-Class submarines, Design of next generation fast attack submarine (SSNX), Design and collaboration work through international agreement to provide submarines to Australia with the AUKUS agreement, Design, Construction, and Overhaul of Nuclear-powered aircraft carriers, Design and Construction of the first new battleship since World War II (BBGN).

Requirements

Bachelor's Degree and 5 years of relevant exempt experience; Master’s Degree and 3 years of relevant professional experience; Ph.D. and 0 years of experience.
Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Nice To Haves

Knowledge of submarine or aircraft carrier machinery and systems
An understanding of how mechanical systems interface with structure, electrical, and other mechanical systems
An understanding of an array of mechanical components, such as hydraulic and electric actuators, linkages, pumps and valves, piping, HVAC systems, structural weldments, mechanical joints, and others
Experience in traditional and computer-based methodologies for the design and analysis of components
Ability to troubleshoot and resolve production, installation, and operational problems of complex machinery and systems
Experience using Team Center, NGP, NX, SAP, MATLAB, or Python
Assist with design studies (e.g., root cause analysis, new design development), identify life-cycle cost reductions, perform risk management studies, conduct laboratory testing, analyze data, and assist with developing integrated technical positions and recommendations for customer
Excellent written and verbal communication skills with proven technical writing ability
Experience working in multi-disciplinary engineering teams
DOD Security Clearance is preferred, but not required to start

Responsibilities

Design, analyze, and develop mechanical, hydraulic, and thermal systems for submarine/carrier applications.
Support ship certification and delivery by evaluating open work and ensuring compliance with Navy and SUBSAFE standards.
Prepare and review technical documentation including design proposals, calculations, analyses, procedures, and deviation requests.
Collaborate with NAVSEA, Electric Boat, vendors, and shipyard personnel to address design and construction challenges.
Apply engineering principles to develop technically sound solutions for complex shipboard problems.
Participate in on-site issue resolution in a shipyard environment; some travel may be required.
Researches, plans, designs and develops mechanical products and systems such as instruments, controls, robots, engines, machines and mechanical, thermal hydraulic or heat transfer systems for production, transmission, measurement, and use of energy.
Applies research to the planning, design, development, and testing of mechanical and/or electromechanical systems, instruments, controls, engines, and/or machines.
