About The Position

AECOM Buildings + Places is seeking a motivated and skilled Mechanical Engineer to help lead buildings projects, especially light industrial projects such as water/waste-water treatment facilities. This position can be based out of Burnaby , BC with opportunities for hybrid work. Some travel to nearby cities may be required. This position is for a newly created position. AECOM Buildings + Places Canada (B+P Canada) is a vibrant and growing fully integrated team spanning architecture, all the building’s engineering disciplines, economics and asset management for design and infrastructure projects. Project assignments may include, although not limited to: Transit and Municipal, Commercial, Institutional projects, Justice, Education and Government. As a Mechanical Engineer, you will play a key role in leading the design, coordination, and delivery of mechanical systems for a variety of building and infrastructure projects across Canada. You will collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams including architects, engineers, and project managers through all project phases, from concept design to construction and commissioning. Your expertise will be instrumental in ensuring technical excellence, code compliance, and constructability in both office-based design work and on-site field engineering during construction.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering plus four (4) years’ experience designing HVAC and plumbing for commercial, institutional, and light industrial facilities, such as Water/Waste-water treatment plants.
  • Professional Engineer in British Columbia.
  • Demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education may be considered.

Nice To Haves

  • 10 (ten) years’ experience designing HVAC and plumbing for light industrial facilities, such as Water/Waste-water treatment plants.
  • Working experience with NBC, BCBC, BCPC, SMACNA, ASHRAE codes and standards.
  • Experience using HAP, AutoCAD, REVIT, Microsoft Office including Excel, Word, Project, and Power Point.
  • Experience with Building Energy Modeling and their software platforms (IES, eQuest, Energy Plus, HOT2000, RETScreen, etc.) would be considered an asset.
  • Experience with sustainability standards (LEED, Net Zero, Passive House, Envision) would be considered an asset.
  • Fire protection design experience.
  • Familiarity with ISO quality management system.
  • Experience working within internal multidisciplinary teams.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication.
  • Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills, presentation ability, and client interface experience in both virtual and in-person settings.

Responsibilities

  • Design HVAC systems, including duct and pipe sizing, equipment selection, equipment schedules, and coordination with vendors.
  • Design complete plumbing systems, including potable water and drainage systems, pump sizing, and water heater selection.
  • Design HVAC control systems and integrate with Building Management Systems (BMS) and SCADA platforms.
  • Perform self-quality control reviews of mechanical design drawings, calculations, and specifications prior to submitting them to senior staff for review and verification.
  • Conduct field investigations to assess existing site conditions for inclusion in construction documents.
  • Work independently and make technical decisions based on building codes, industry standards, and company best practices.
  • Coordinate design efforts with internal disciplines including architectural, electrical, structural, and civil teams.
  • Attend and lead meetings with clients, contractors, vendors, and stakeholders to present technical content and address project requirements.
  • Actively participate in multidisciplinary coordination sessions to ensure fully integrated design solutions.
  • Respond to RFIs, review shop drawings and submittals, assess change requests.
  • Perform regular site inspections and field reviews.
