About The Position

ABOUT COOLIT SYSTEMS INC.  Founded in Calgary, Alberta in 2001, CoolIT Systems is the leading Direct Liquid Cooling technology provider for data centers, supercomputers, and desktop computers. We design and manufacture solutions used by the largest tech companies globally.  Recognized as one of “The Americas’ Fastest Growing Companies 2023” by Financial Times and honored with the Deloitte Fast 50 Clean Technology award in 2022, as well as the Deloitte Fast 500 distinction in both 2021 and 2022, CoolIT's rapid growth is capturing global attention.  As demand for generative AI, high performance computing and cloud solutions rapidly expands, there has never been a more exciting time to join our team.  WHAT YOU’LL DO:  Role:  The Mechanical Engineer role at CoolIT Systems focuses on designing and developing advanced Coolant Distribution Units (CDUs) for direct liquid cooling systems. You will support the full product lifecycle—from concept through production—while collaborating with cross-functional teams and partners. The role emphasizes continuous improvement to enhance performance and manufacturability. Ideal candidates bring a strong mechanical engineering foundation, proficiency in CAD and simulation tools, and effective communication skills.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or directly related discipline.
  • Registration as an EIT with APEGA, or eligibility to obtain EIT status within 12 months.
  • Minimum of 3 years relevant mechanical engineering experience, ideally in a product design role relevant to liquid cooling, datacenter, HVAC, or building mechanical services industry.
  • Detailed design calculations; heat transfer, fluid mechanics, piping design, stress/strain, and HVAC.
  • Proficiency in using CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks) for detailed mechanical designs & drawings.
  • Proficiency with finite element computer simulations; CFD, heat transfer, and seismic analysis.
  • Effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Strong problem-solving, analysis, and risk mitigation skills.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Attention to detail and documentation to ensure that all design requirements are covered, verified, and validated.

Nice To Haves

  • Understanding of designing parts and assemblies for high volume production.
  • Understanding of machining, sheet metal, welding, bending/forming, and related manufacturing methods.
  • Understanding of fluid dynamics principles, especially as they relate to heat transfer and fluid flow in cooling systems.
  • Process piping, P&ID and building mechanical design, particularly with respect to HVAC and fluid transfer.
  • Understanding of pump, motor, heat exchanger, and sensor selection, testing, and validation.
  • Rapid prototyping manufacturing techniques and testing of thermal/mechanical components; familiarity with lab equipment for data collection.
  • Reliability analysis, tolerance stack-up calculations, or statistical design tools like design for lean six sigma would be an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the design of Coolant Distribution Units (CDUs) through the NPi process; concept development, prototyping, DVT, UL Certification, and PVT to product launch and mass production.
  • Support rapid iteration of design concepts through technology assessment, feasibility analysis, and proofs of concept, oversee the building and testing of thermal, hydraulic, and integrated assembly prototypes for validation.
  • Work closely with core teams, customers, and industry partners to ensure our CDU designs are delivered on time, meeting and exceeding market needs.
  • Detailed product design using principles of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and mechanical engineering with a focus on delivering high performance and high reliability products.
  • Create detailed engineering drawings, reports, design reviews, and other documentation to clearly explain convey design ideas, test results, and recommendations to internal teams and external stakeholders.
  • Develop CDU component and assembly designs, drawings, and other engineering documentation.
  • Continuously look for ways to make our CDU designs better performing, improve reliability, reduce costs, and increase efficiency.

Benefits

  • Vacation and flex days, and paid company-wide shutdown during the holiday season.
  • Comprehensive benefits including Dental, Drugs, Optical, Paramedical and Health Spending. These costs are covered by CoolIT and are enacted from your first day.
  • Dress for your day – in a casual yet professional environment.
  • Retention rewards like “The Big Coffee Break” that reward tenure with additional vacation time and a monetary bonus.
