About The Position

McCuaig & Associates Engineering Ltd. is looking for a mechanical EIT or Engineer to join our team at our Burnaby, BC location. The ideal candidate will have a keen interest in building mechanical systems, with a minimum of 3-5 years of related experience. This role involves assisting with full cycle project management, preparing design documents, liaising with clients and contractors, performing site reviews, coordinating meetings, interpreting codes and regulations, developing budgets, reviewing shop drawings, and carrying out contract administration duties. The position also requires evaluating technical design quality and supporting activities that ensure a high level of technological quality within the firm.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent education/experience
  • Registered as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) or EIT with Engineers and Geoscientists BC; or eligible for registration
  • Minimum 3-5 years of consulting engineering experience in building mechanical systems
  • Demonstrated ability to independently design plumbing and fire suppression systems for commercial/institutional buildings
  • Experience preparing plumbing and fire protection design drawings, specifications, and tender documents
  • Ability to perform hydraulic calculations for fire sprinkler systems (NFPA 13) and plumbing system sizing
  • Strong knowledge of applicable codes and standards, including BC Plumbing Code, NFPA 13, NFPA 14, BC Building Code, and relevant CSA standards
  • Experience with domestic water, sanitary/storm drainage, and hot water recirculation systems
  • Experience with standpipe systems and fire pump design
  • Familiarity with boiler room equipment design and hydronic systems
  • Experience coordinating with architectural, structural, and electrical disciplines during design and construction
  • Ability to review shop drawings, respond to RFIs, and perform construction site reviews
  • Strong technical writing and verbal communication skills, including report preparation and client presentations
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and contribute to project budget and schedule control
  • Proficiency in Bluebeam Revu, Autodesk AutoCAD/Revit, and Microsoft Office
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work both independently and collaboratively
  • Valid driver’s license; position includes travel to project sites
  • Willingness to undergo security clearance or criminal record check when required

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with hydraulic calculation software (e.g., HydraCalc or equivalent)

Responsibilities

  • Assist with full cycle management of projects from project initiation to post-construction
  • Preparation of design documents such as drawings, specifications, and other relevant technical documents for client review, tender, permit application, and construction
  • Use building mechanical systems and construction techniques to come up with solutions to potential design or on-site issues
  • Liaise with clients, contractors, suppliers, and other specialty consultants
  • Site reviews/field investigation
  • Coordinate and run meetings internally and externally
  • Assist with interpreting and implementing applicable codes and regulations
  • Develop budgets and cash flows
  • Develop/review shop drawings
  • Carry out contract administration duties
  • Evaluate the quality of technical design and support activities which assure a high level of technological quality throughout the firm
  • Check and review the work of junior staff for accuracy and completeness
  • Mentor junior staff and support team development
