Mechanical Engineer III or IV

Voyager Technologies•San Diego, CA
•Onsite

About The Position

The Mechanical Engineer owns mechanical design and analysis from concept through flight, collaborating with electrical and RF engineers, systems engineers, and program management to deliver hardware that withstands launch and operates in the space environment. This hands-on role oversees the full hardware lifecycle, including trade studies, requirements, analysis, drawings, fabrication, testing, and delivery. The position is part of the Engineering department, is based in San Diego, California, is 100% onsite, and reports to the Mechanical Engineering Manager. The role involves designing spacecraft enclosures, structures, systems, and mounting solutions; performing structural and thermal analysis; preparing fabrication and inspection drawings; and collaborating on PCB packaging and mechanical-electrical integration. The engineer also develops manufacturing instructions, works with fabrication and assembly technicians, writes and supports environmental test procedures, reviews test data, and contributes to team tools, templates, processes, and standards.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in mechanical or aerospace engineering, or equivalent work experience.
  • At least 6 years of mechanical/electromechanical design experience.
  • Knowledge of spaceflight requirements, standards, and environments.
  • Strong understanding of statics, dynamics, heat transfer, structural mechanics, materials, and fabrication.
  • Excellent communication skills and proficiency in developing and delivering presentations, including formal design reviews.
  • Experience using FEA tools such as SolidWorks or Ansys to validate structural, thermal, vibrational, and performance requirements.
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD using SolidWorks and ability to apply GD&T per ASME-Y14.5 to create engineering drawings.
  • Understanding of machining and mechanical assembly as they affect design.
  • Experience writing manufacturing instructions.
  • Ability to work autonomously without supervision; highly motivated and self-starting.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen and able to obtain and maintain a U.S. government security clearance.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience integrating electronic components such as PCBAs, motors, and sensors into mechanical designs for space or military applications.
  • Structural or thermal testing experience, including TVAC, thermal cycling, random vibration, or shock.

Responsibilities

  • Own hardware through its lifecycle, from concept and requirements through design, analysis, build, test, and delivery.
  • Design mechanical enclosures, structures, systems, and mounting solutions for spacecraft hardware.
  • Perform structural and thermal analyses to verify design margins against launch loads, on-orbit thermal environments, and mission requirements.
  • Generate detailed part and assembly drawings suitable for fabrication and inspection.
  • Collaborate with electrical and RF engineers on PCB layout, packaging, and mechanical-electrical integration.
  • Develop manufacturing instructions and work with fabrication and assembly technicians to build flight and engineering hardware.
  • Write environmental test procedures for TVAC, sine/random vibration, and shock; support test execution and data review.
  • Contribute to the enhancement of team tools, templates, processes, and standards.
