About The Position

General Fusion is a global leader in the race to commercialize clean fusion energy, pursuing a practical approach called Magnetized Target Fusion. The company aims to provide zero-carbon fusion power to the grid in the early to mid-2030s. At their state-of-the-art labs in Richmond, BC, they are operating a groundbreaking fusion demonstration machine called Lawson Machine 26 (LM26), designed to achieve transformational technical milestones and accelerate General Fusion’s technology to commercialization. The path to market is funded by a global syndicate of leading energy venture capital firms, industry leaders, and technology pioneers. The Mechanical Engineer will work with external partners to develop and execute test programs in support of General Fusion’s technology development of practical fusion energy solutions. The successful applicant will be expected to hit the ground running and thrive in a fast-paced and constantly evolving work environment. This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated Mechanical Engineer looking for diverse and challenging work.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Engineering Physics (mechanical specialization).
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in mechanical design.
  • Strong foundation in engineering fundamentals (statics, dynamics, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics).
  • Experience designing, building, and testing mechanical systems or prototypes.
  • Strong understanding of materials, fabrication methods.
  • Experience working with partners or contractors to deliver technical outcomes.
  • Ability to take ownership of projects and drive them from concept through execution.
  • Ability to translate evolving internal requirements into clear external specifications.
  • Comfortable working in fast-paced, deadline-driven environments with high technical complexity.

Nice To Haves

  • Registration with EGBC as a Professional Engineer, or in progress.
  • Experience in R&D or low-volume production environments.
  • Experience designing for demanding conditions (e.g., high vacuum, high energy, high cleanliness).
  • Proficiency with SolidWorks and SolidWorks PDM.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate directly with partners and suppliers to develop key systems, test beds, and components, including sourcing and evaluating specialized parts.
  • Manage partner relationships and drive successful execution of joint development efforts.
  • Design mechanical systems to solve complex engineering challenges, including analytical calculations and FEA to validate performance.
  • Develop and execute test programs with partners to identify and mitigate technical risks.
  • Document design decisions, test plans, and experimental results.
  • Contribute to team growth through knowledge sharing, participation in design reviews, and development of efficient engineering processes.
  • Promote a positive work environment and uphold safe work practices.
  • Support additional tasks and projects as required.
