Reporting to the Mechanical Section Manager, the Mechanical Engineer is a member of the integrated project team that contributes Mechanical engineering knowledge and analysis during the design phase of our work. The project mix will span a variety of typologies and systems: assignments include hyperscale data centres and collaborations with other business groups within HDR including Water, Resources, and Transportation Business Groups. The role involves working on multiple projects with project sites in various locations. The Mechanical Engineer may be involved in construction contract administration, site reviews on different projects, and condition assessments. The successful candidate will participate in a growing collaborative and integrated engineering team. Common areas for progression and career growth for this position include the Senior Mechanical Engineer role, Technical Specialization, and Project Management.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • Previous experience in mechanical system design of commercial or institutional buildings
  • Requires professional engineering license recognized by the licensing board for the location of the position offered. Example: Professional Engineer (PE or P.Eng) license.
  • Experience in commercial or institutional facilities
  • Computer experience using MS Office, Trane TRACE or similar software, manufacturer selection software
  • Previous experience with an architectural/engineering or engineering consulting firm
  • An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must

Nice To Haves

  • A minimum of 3 years' experience in mechanical system design of commercial, industrial, or institutional buildings
  • Data Centre, Semiconductor, Healthcare, Laboratory or Sports facilities experience
  • Experience and/or interest in sustainable design/LEED desired
  • Experience using AI productivity tools to accelerate project workstreams including technical writing, code and specification research, and performance simulation and modelling
  • Strong communication and listening skills. Ability to handle multiple concurrent assignments
  • Good organizational skills, confident curiosity, strong analytical judgment, leadership potential
  • Ability to rigorously audit, validate, and verify all AI-generated outputs (calculations, code interpretations, and routing designs) against core mechanical engineering fundamentals and regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the work of the mechanical design team through the schematic design development and contract document phase of a project
  • Establish meetings and participate in reviews with various governing agencies for code compliance
  • Coordinate workload to complete the document on schedule
  • Conduct work sessions at the project site in conjunction with the Project Manager and other disciplines
  • Review mechanical documents for areas of conflict with all disciplines
  • Write and edit mechanical specifications. Select equipment, mechanical systems and devices
  • Coordinate with and assist affected disciplines with addenda, RFIs, and change orders, and take responsibility to incorporate agreed-upon changes into the project documents
  • Produce and coordinate several projects concurrently
  • Provide construction contract administration as needed
  • Conduct QA/QC on the work of other Mechanical Project Engineers, Mechanical Project Coordinators or Mechanical CAD Technicians as needed
  • Perform other duties as needed
