Mechanical Engineer

ButterflyMX•Irvine, CA
•$175,000 - $190,000•Onsite

About The Position

ButterflyMX is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to design, develop, and support the physical and mechanical aspects of their hardware products. This role involves working collaboratively within a high-performance hardware development team at their Southern California Hardware Engineering lab. The engineer will provide expertise in mechanical, physical, and thermal solutions, reporting to the SVP Hardware. The position is responsible for leading and owning all mechanical, physical, and thermal aspects of products throughout their lifecycle, from requirements and concept development to design review, vendor engagement, release, validation, and production support.

Requirements

  • Mechanical Engineering Bachelor's degree or equivalent relevant experience
  • Fluent in SolidWorks 3D modeling software including FEA (Finite Element Analysis)
  • Significant practical experience with sheet metal, cast and machined metal and plastics manufacturing processes
  • Solid understanding of mechanical engineering fundamentals, including forces and torques, mass and basic thermodynamics
  • Insatiably curious
  • Fanatical about product design and all aspects of the creation of physical products
  • Thrives in a fast-paced, collaborative product development environment with strong accountability and ownership

Responsibilities

  • Own the mechanical design of ButterflyMX products from requirements through production, including enclosures, molded plastic and metal components, mounting systems, and supporting mechanical structures.
  • Translate product requirements, customer needs, and industrial design intent into robust mechanical solutions that meet functional, aesthetic, reliability, durability, cost, and manufacturability requirements.
  • Rapidly develop, prototype, test, and iterate mechanical concepts using 3D printing, CNC machining, soft tooling, and other fabrication methods to resolve electromechanical challenges quickly.
  • Design products for real-world and extreme conditions, including temperature, impact, vibration, moisture, and other environmental stresses; use FEA, structural analysis, and physical testing as appropriate to validate designs.
  • Lead mechanical design reviews before releasing designs or significant changes to manufacturers; clearly communicate design intent, rationale, tradeoffs, risks, and open issues and incorporate stakeholder feedback before release.
  • Collaborate closely with product, industrial design, electrical, firmware, quality, supply chain, and manufacturing teams to resolve conflicting inputs and drive alignment on an integrated product design.
  • Proactively identify and communicate design risks, technical uncertainties, and capability gaps; develop validation, mitigation, and contingency plans when material risks remain.
  • Identify, qualify, and work directly with manufacturing partners to resolve DFM, DFA, DFS, tooling, tolerance, cosmetic, material, process, and quality issues with minimal avoidable rework or schedule delay.
  • Maintain complete, current, and controlled mechanical design documentation, including master 3D CAD models, STEP files, 2D engineering drawings, critical and inspection dimensions, tolerances, specifications, renderings, technical illustrations, and supporting product documentation.
  • Own mechanical design changes and configuration control, ensuring updates from internal teams and external partners are reviewed, reconciled with requirements, aligned with stakeholders, and incorporated into the authoritative design before release.
  • Establish realistic commitments and deliver mechanical designs, drawings, files, reviews, and feedback on time; track commitments in company project-management systems and proactively communicate schedule risks, delays, and downstream impacts.
  • Operate with urgency and responsiveness when mechanical work affects dependent engineering, prototyping, testing, vendor, or manufacturing activities, providing timely information and decisions needed to keep work moving.
  • Participate actively and professionally in internal and external meetings and collaborative problem-solving sessions, bringing clear mechanical engineering perspectives, decisions, and subject-matter leadership.
  • Drive innovation by evaluating new materials, coatings, manufacturing techniques, and design approaches that improve product performance, aesthetics, installation, serviceability, robustness, or cost.
  • Challenge assumptions and simplify designs wherever practical, reducing mechanical complexity and cost without compromising product quality, reliability, or user experience.
