Mechanical Engineer 4

The STEELASTIC Co.•Cuyahoga Falls, OH

About The Position

The Mechanical Engineer 4 performs mechanical machine design engineering duties, product design and customization, and resolves design and documentation issues. The primary focus is capital equipment associated with the production of pneumatic tire components. The role requires extensive experience designing industrial capital equipment and proficiency in machine-element velocity and RPM calculations; industrial component sizing, application, and sourcing; mechanical framework and component design; SolidWorks modeling and drawing generation; and linear static and dynamic finite element analysis. The engineer produces clear, accurate engineering documentation and communicates with internal and external office and production personnel. The position also involves estimating assignment completion dates, communicating bottlenecks and delays, exchanging design feedback, occasionally delegating work, independently completing assignments with guidance from bi-weekly design reviews, and collaborating with production, programming, electrical, and software personnel to troubleshoot systems and meet specifications. The engineer should understand machining, welding, and machine controls, and be proficient in machine risk assessment and Microsoft Office software. A bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering Technology from an ABET-accredited program is the stated minimum, or significant commensurate experience with demonstrated ability. The position has no supervisory responsibilities, though occasional delegation to lower-level or contract engineers may be required. Work is performed in both an office and manufacturing area. The employee may need to walk, stand, reach, and sit for up to eight hours a day and may occasionally lift or move up to 50 pounds without assistance. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.

Requirements

  • Strict minimum of 10 years of experience designing industrial capital equipment; the target is 15–20 years.
  • Target of at least 10,000 logged hours designing industrial capital equipment.
  • Proficiency in calculating machine-element velocities and RPMs from parts-per-minute or meters-per-minute production requirements.
  • Proficiency in sizing, applying, and sourcing industrial machine components, including belts, chains, gearboxes, bearings, motors, pneumatic actuators, valves, and piping.
  • Proficiency in designing steel and aluminum frameworks, brackets, shafts, rolls, pulleys, and similar components.
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks assembly, part, and drawing generation, and linear static and dynamic FEA.
  • Ability to produce clean, clear, and accurate engineering documentation.
  • Strong written and oral communication with internal and external office and production personnel.
  • Ability to estimate assignment completion dates and communicate bottlenecks and delays.
  • Ability to provide and accept constructive design feedback and complete work independently with periodic design-review guidance.
  • Ability to debug and troubleshoot in collaboration with production and programming personnel.
  • Sufficient understanding of machining and welding to estimate and optimize component costs.
  • Sufficient understanding of machine controls to collaborate with electrical and software engineers, including work involving sequence diagrams, control-device lists, sensors, and wiring.
  • Proficiency in ANSI and/or ISO machine risk assessment and mitigation.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software, including Word, Excel, SharePoint, and Teams.
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering Technology from an ABET-accredited program, or significant commensurate experience plus demonstrated ability.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience designing rubber extrusion heads and dies.
  • Experience designing rubber extrusion production lines.
  • Experience designing machinery and systems for a rubber mill room and/or tire-component preparation area.
  • Ability to troubleshoot relevant equipment or systems at the local facility and occasionally at a customer site.

Responsibilities

  • Perform mechanical machine design engineering for capital equipment used to produce pneumatic tire components.
  • Design and customize products, and resolve design and documentation issues.
  • Calculate machine-element velocities and RPMs from production requirements.
  • Size, apply, and source industrial machine components, including power-transmission and pneumatic components.
  • Design steel and aluminum frameworks, brackets, shafts, rolls, pulleys, and related components.
  • Generate SolidWorks assemblies, parts, and drawings, and conduct linear static and dynamic analysis (FEA).
  • Create accurate engineering documentation, including bills of materials, assembly drawings, sequence diagrams, pneumatic schematics, control-device lists, detail drawings, calculation sheets, functional specifications, purchase specifications, and installation and operation instructions.
  • Communicate with internal and external office and production personnel.
  • Estimate completion dates, anticipate and communicate bottlenecks and delays, and provide and accept constructive design feedback.
  • Complete work independently with guidance from bi-weekly team design reviews; occasionally delegate assignments to lower-level or contract engineers.
  • Collaborate with production and programming personnel to debug and troubleshoot systems and bring them into compliance with specifications.
  • Collaborate with electrical and software engineers on machine controls, sequence diagrams, control-device lists, sensors, and wiring accommodations.
  • Apply machine risk assessment and mitigation practices using ANSI and/or ISO standards.
  • Understand machining and welding sufficiently to estimate and optimize component costs.
