About The Position

The University of Texas at Austin is seeking to hire a Mechanical Engineer/Mechanical Graduate Engineer to serve within Utilities and Energy Management (UEM). UEM provides dependable and efficient electricity with 99.99% reliability, chilled water, steam, deionized water, and compressed air to UT Austin, as well as distribution and collection piping for natural gas, water, reclaimed water, wastewater, and stormwater systems. This role is critical in providing the utilities and energy needed to transform UT Austin campuses and advance UT's education, research, and public service missions. The position assumes responsibility for supporting all UEM working groups in a mechanical engineering capacity specific to utility plants and distribution systems, applying UEM and industry standards and complex engineering analyses to ensure safety, compliance, and reliability of mechanical systems. The selected applicant will undergo a security-sensitive background check and a certified 3-year driving record review.

Requirements

  • Certified Engineer-In-Training (E.I.T.) in the State of Texas or the candidate must meet all qualifications for licensure and obtain a Texas E.I.T. within six (6) months of employment (for Mechanical Graduate Engineer).
  • A Bachelor’s degree from an ABET-accredited program in Mechanical Engineering or a related field (for Mechanical Graduate Engineer).
  • Strong knowledge of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and energy systems (for Mechanical Graduate Engineer).
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to identify and solve problems, think critically, and create solutions.
  • Ability to adapt to change and quickly learn new technologies and processes.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including presentations to nontechnical audiences.
  • Working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Texas or licensed in another State with the ability to obtain reciprocity in Texas within 6 months of employment (for Mechanical Engineer).
  • Minimum four years experience in industrial, steam, chilled water, or utility systems (for Mechanical Engineer).
  • Experience with project management and budget development (for Mechanical Engineer).
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis for any employee without sponsorship.
  • Class "C" operator's driver's license.
  • Provide a current three year driving record from the current state of residence.
  • If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver's license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident.

  • Familiarity with environmental regulations in the energy sector.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluates, troubleshoots, and reviews the operation of utility systems including combustion gas turbines, steam turbine generators, chillers, boilers, cooling towers, and distribution systems.
  • Analyzes controls, automation, and metered data to identify improvement opportunities, recommend corrective actions, and optimize system performance.
  • Manages and coordinates special utility system projects by developing schedules, cost estimates, budgets, detailed final construction plans, specifications, special conditions, contracts, and agreements.
  • Oversees project progress from preliminary project feasibility and long-range planning through design, construction, and commissioning.
  • Prepares documentation for investigations, feasibility studies, and other projects, including initial, progress, and final reports.
  • Determines project initial and long-term costs and savings, and prepares life-cycle analyses.
  • Reports findings through written reports and presentations using advanced reporting tools such as Tableau and Power BI.
  • Advises on industry standards and code requirements.
  • Maintains, updates, and creates design and construction specifications and standard details.
  • Reviews engineering scopes of work, assists in engineering firm selection, and reviews deliverables from outsourced engineers.
  • Performs technical design review as a subject matter expert in mechanical engineering.
  • Reviews construction submittals, responds to requests for information, and reviews proposed contract changes for compliance with design standards.
  • Facilitates effective communication among department and campus stakeholders.
  • Establishes connections with external entities such as government agencies, contractors, consultants, and the public.
  • Identifies and implements innovative solutions to enhance system efficiency, reliability, and sustainability.
  • Identifies opportunities for process improvement within assignments.
  • Promotes the use of innovative tools and methodologies to enhance project delivery efficiency and stakeholder satisfaction.
  • Follows all University and UEM policies and procedures, takes required training, and identifies and reports safety hazards.
  • Completes required continuing education.
  • Performs work tasks in a safe manner, wears proper personal protective equipment, and reports near misses and incidents.
  • Implements and enforces safety protocols in all assigned activities.

  • Drives UT vehicles in a safe manner.
  • Performs other related functions as assigned.
  • Required to carry University issued cell phone during work and on-call hours.
  • Expected to work at all UT Austin campuses and facilities.
  • Maintain acceptable driver rating as established in Policy: UTS157 Section 2.5.4.
  • May be required to work in confined and elevated spaces.
  • Shifts may be extended- including nights, holidays, and weekends.
