About The Position

The Mechanical Engineer III is an experienced individual contributor who supports existing products throughout their life cycle and leads or supports development of new mechanical products, subsystems, fixtures, and product improvements for domestic and global markets. The role works with Regulatory, Marketing, Quality, Operations, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, vendors, and other engineering disciplines on product changes, design control deliverables, sustaining engineering, continuous improvement, and design transfer. The position requires in-depth mechanical engineering knowledge and practical product development experience. The engineer works independently with minimal guidance on complex assignments, applies best practices to improve products and processes, and serves as a technical resource for less-experienced colleagues. The role calls for ownership, sound judgment, cross-functional influence, and leadership qualities that may support future progression into people management or technical leadership. DEXIS is a manufacturer and distributor of dental imaging equipment, software, and solutions. Its Quakertown facility is the North American hub for design and manufacturing of dental imaging devices and software, with engineering, operations, regulatory, and quality professionals working collaboratively in the medical device field.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or an equivalent technical discipline.
  • 10 or more years of relevant experience in mechanical product design, sustaining engineering, new product development, design transfer, manufacturing support, or a closely related engineering role; an advanced degree may be considered in combination with relevant experience.
  • Ability to independently complete complex engineering assignments with minimal guidance and make sound recommendations based on data, analysis, risk, and business needs.
  • Strong working knowledge of mechanical parts, assemblies, mechanisms, materials, tolerancing, drawings, specifications, and design for manufacturability.
  • Proficiency with 3D CAD and 2D drawing tools; SolidWorks, Creo, or equivalent.
  • Hands-on experience with testing, prototyping, troubleshooting, root-cause analysis, and verification of mechanical designs, products, or fixtures.
  • Working knowledge of design control documentation, engineering change control, risk-based decision making, and cross-functional product development practices.
  • Ability to lead small to moderate technical workstreams, coordinate cross-functional input, mentor less-experienced team members, and influence without direct authority.
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, including explaining technical information clearly and building consensus in complex or sensitive situations.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and standard engineering documentation practices.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in a regulated industry such as medical device, aerospace, or automotive.
  • Experience with Design Control, DFM, GMP, FDA, ISO 9001, ISO 13485, risk management, or related quality system requirements.
  • Experience supporting FDA 510(k)-cleared medical devices or regulated product submissions.
  • Intermediate to strong knowledge of materials properties and processing techniques, including plastic injection molding, CNC machining, sheet metal forming or stamping, casting, and additive manufacturing.
  • Experience with FMEA, fault tree analysis, risk analysis, usability or human factors considerations, component selection, reliability principles, value engineering, and design for assembly.
  • Experience with basic machine shop equipment, 3D printing equipment, prototype fabrication, and fixture development.
  • Formal project management, technical leadership, Lean, EBS, or continuous improvement training.
  • Demonstrated interest or capability in developing people, improving team effectiveness, and preparing for a future management or technical leadership role.

Responsibilities

  • Lead or support engineering projects from concept and project specification through design, prototype build, verification, design transfer, manufacturing implementation, and post-launch support.
  • Develop mechanical designs, assemblies, components, fixtures, tooling, and related specifications, balancing safety, reliability, manufacturability, serviceability, cost, and user needs.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate customer, regulatory, quality, manufacturing, and business requirements into practical mechanical design solutions.
  • Prepare and maintain engineering documentation, including design inputs and outputs, drawings, bills of material, test protocols and reports, engineering analyses, ECNs, and design history file content as applicable.
  • Participate in and potentially lead cross-functional design reviews, FMEA activities, risk analysis, usability or human factors reviews, troubleshooting sessions, and technical decision reviews.
  • Develop verification strategies and write or review test protocols for mechanical products, components, assemblies, fixtures, and design changes.
  • Perform hands-on testing, prototyping, troubleshooting, root-cause analysis, and design iteration using engineering judgment and data from multiple sources.
  • Interpret legacy designs and perform sustaining engineering, including product support, component obsolescence resolution, supplier changes, value engineering, and continuous improvement.
  • Interface with manufacturing, subcontractors, suppliers, and international design teams during design transfer, technical support, and vendor coordination.
  • Design, fabricate, or coordinate test parts, equipment, jigs, and fixtures using internal resources, suppliers, basic machine tools, and rapid prototyping methods as appropriate.
  • Support Regulatory Affairs and Quality Assurance by integrating applicable design control, risk management, regulatory, and quality system requirements into engineering work.
  • Facilitate or contribute to the ECN process for cross-functional workstreams and complete assigned engineering deliverables with appropriate quality, traceability, and timeliness.
  • Prioritize and manage multiple projects or activities with limited supervision, escalating risks, tradeoffs, and resource needs in a timely and professional manner.
  • Provide technical guidance, peer review, coaching, and support to engineers, co-ops, interns, and less-experienced colleagues without direct supervisory authority.
  • Demonstrate leadership through accountability, clear communication, collaboration, constructive feedback, and consensus-building across functions.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement and Envista Business System activities, such as Daily Management, Problem Solving Process, Visual Project Management, and standard work improvement.
  • Model accountability, build trust with cross-functional partners, use data and structured problem solving, and demonstrate readiness for future people leadership.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.
