The primary responsibility for the Mechanical Engineer is to design, develop, and maintain all mechanical aspects for a family of gear manufacturing machines and automation. Requirements

  • Solid Model Creation: use of 3D CAD software (Creo preferred). With knowledge of mapkeys, UDFs, skeletons as well as large assembly management, piping and MBD.
  • Ability to properly create and detail part prints including the use of GD&T
  • Understanding of version/revision logic and can resolve conflicts. Use intent to modify and locking as needed.
  • Bill of Material (BOM) Creation/Maintenance: Comprehension of how BOM’s work to ensure proper part release strategy
  • Sales Order BOM: Understand Price Book options and their dependencies.
  • Component Design: Apply proper fits to precision components, choose a component based on the manufacturer's data to suit a design specification, design for ease of manufacturing.
  • System Design: develop options based on Customer Specifications from scratch; designs consist of motion items including rails/trucks, ability to integrate numerous purchased parts to minimize manufactured parts, design for ease of assembly.
  • Component/Assembly Identification: Attend machine launch meetings and verify machine and assembly completeness and compliance with the customer's requirements.
  • Impact Estimation: provide Engineering hours and material cost estimation for quotations.
  • Sheet Metal Design: use proper locating holes, rip reliefs, hand bends, and slots. Design for ease of manufacturing and assembly, use proper design intent.
  • GD&T and Tolerance Applications: have knowledge of and understand when and where to apply GD&T. Develop required tolerances based on manufacturer's specifications.
  • Proven ability to: Communicate technical information effectively with all functional Engineering areas and other downstream and upstream departments within the plant

Responsibilities

  • Design, development, documentation, and troubleshooting of gear manufacturing machines and automation.
  • Work with other engineering groups (Electrical Controls, Fluid Power, Software and Application Engineering) to facilitate a Systems Engineering approach to the machine or automation design.
  • Work with Proposals and Sales to understand customer specifications and applicable safety standards to develop machine cost and schedule estimates.
  • Use 3D parametric CAD software for modeling of components and systems.
  • Maintain Master BOMs for current and legacy machines.
  • Ensure unique customer specifications are incorporated into each design.
  • Review prior executions and compare/contrast to current practice.
  • Evaluate technical performance of the resultant machine.
  • Provide part specification changes (Engineering Change Order) based on design requirements.
  • Interface with Manufacturing Engineering to apply the appropriate part coding and documentation to facilitate efficient machine assembly.
  • Prioritize and address Engineering issues in a timely manner from Assembly, Runoff, Field Service or Supply Chain.
  • Facilitate Design Reviews, FMEA (Failure Mode Effects Analysis) and Risk Management meetings by coordinating the meeting, recording/publishing meeting minutes, formalizing documents, and driving the completion of open action items.
  • Respond to internal and external requests for information.
  • Work in fast paced environment.
  • Participate in process improvement efforts that identify deficiencies in Mechanical Engineering and systematically develop solutions.
