About The Position

At Thorlabs, Mechanical Engineer I researches, plans, and designs mechanical products and systems. Under general supervision, the role participates in directing and coordinating activities involved in the fabrication, operation, application, and repair of mechanical products and systems. The position is based in Newton, New Jersey, but may occasionally require duties at other Thorlabs locations. Products developed support Specials, OEM, and standard ecommerce products. The role also requires meeting company standards for work quantity and quality, performing tasks in compliance with company policies and procedures, and following workplace behavior standards. The company may change or assign other duties to the position.

Requirements

At least 1 year of experience in mechanical engineering design; the stated experience range is 1–3 years.
Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related field.
Excellent statistical data analysis and problem-solving abilities.
Working knowledge of SolidWorks or similar 3D modeling software.
Strong innovation skills.
Ability to report progress and problems effectively through written or oral reports.
Flexibility and adaptability in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment.

Nice To Haves

Strong proficiency in MS Office and communication tools.

Responsibilities

Design products ranging from single-piece components to complex systems.
Research and analyze customer design proposals, specifications, and other data to determine design or application feasibility.
Plan and direct engineering personnel in fabricating test-control apparatus and equipment, and in developing testing methods and procedures.
Direct and coordinate fabrication and installation activities to ensure products and systems conform to engineering designs and customer specifications.
Enter data and revise and control documents in the Thorlabs ERP system.
Meet company standards for the quantity and quality of work performed and comply with company policies, procedures, and workplace behavior directives.
