Mechanical Engineer, HVAC (Facilities)

SpaceX•Cape Canaveral, FL

About The Position

SpaceX is hiring a Mechanical Engineer, HVAC, to design, commission, and maintain HVAC and mechanical systems for facilities including offices, hangars, rocket facilities, and customer payload environmental control systems. The role applies engineering principles and relevant ASHRAE standards to system design, calculations, installation, operation, and maintenance. It also involves evaluating design feasibility, cost, and maintenance requirements; troubleshooting equipment and system failures; and coordinating with engineers, other personnel, and maintenance crews. The position may require travel to other SpaceX locations. The work schedule may vary based on site operational needs, and flexibility is required. Candidates must be able to pass a Cape Canaveral Air Force Base background check and meet the stated physical demands. ITAR eligibility requirements apply.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, physics, aerospace engineering, or another engineering discipline.
  • At least 1 year of professional experience in the design and/or maintenance of industrial HVAC systems.
  • Ability to pass the Cape Canaveral Air Force Base background check.
  • Willingness to travel to other SpaceX locations as necessary.
  • Flexibility to work a schedule that may vary according to site operational needs.
  • Ability to lift up to 35 pounds unassisted.
  • Ability to perform job-related lifting, standing, climbing, bending, grasping, sitting, pulling, pushing, stooping, stretching, and carrying.
  • Must meet applicable ITAR eligibility requirements: be a U.S. citizen or national, a U.S. lawful permanent resident, a refugee or asylee as specified, or eligible to obtain required U.S. Department of State authorizations.

Nice To Haves

  • Professional experience with clean-room design and maintenance.
  • Professional experience with energy modeling and HVAC load calculations.
  • Professional experience designing, sizing, specifying, and installing HVAC chillers, pumps, boilers, air handlers, heat pumps, HEPA filtration, and building automation.
  • Familiarity with HVAC/facility monitoring hardware and software.
  • Intermediate experience with AutoCAD and/or Revit.

Responsibilities

  • Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, schematics, and computer-generated reports.
  • Perform air-conditioning cooling-load and heat-loss calculations in accordance with ASHRAE standards.
  • Lead or contribute to HVAC system design for offices, hangars, rocket facilities, and customer payload environmental control systems.
  • Design HVAC systems to comply with ANSI/ASHRAE Standards 55, 62.1, and 90.1.
  • Implement and execute HVAC system commissioning in compliance with ASHRAE Guideline 0 and Standard 202.
  • Confer with engineers and other personnel to implement operating procedures, resolve system malfunctions, and provide technical information.
  • Research and analyze design proposals, specifications, manuals, and other data to evaluate feasibility, cost, and maintenance requirements.
  • Specify system components or direct product modifications to ensure conformance with engineering design and performance specifications.
  • Research, design, evaluate, install, operate, and maintain mechanical products, equipment, systems, and processes to meet requirements.
  • Investigate equipment failures and difficulties, diagnose faulty operation, and recommend corrective action to maintenance crews.
  • Develop mechanical and controls designs using drafting tools or computer-assisted design and drafting equipment and software.
  • Oversee installation, operation, maintenance, and repair to ensure machines and equipment function according to specifications.
  • Conduct research and analyze the feasibility, design, operation, and performance of equipment, components, and systems.
  • Recommend design modifications to eliminate machine or system malfunctions.
  • Develop and test models of alternate designs and processing methods to assess feasibility, operating-condition effects, possible applications, and the need for modification.
  • Estimate costs, submit bids for engineering, construction, or extraction projects, and prepare contract documents.
  • Establish and coordinate maintenance and safety procedures, service schedules, and material supplies needed to maintain machines and equipment.
  • Study industrial processes to determine where and how equipment can be applied.
  • Apply fluid-dynamics, thermodynamics, and heat-transfer knowledge as required to design tubing and piping systems.
