Mechanical & Electrical Technician

silanaNew York, NY
Onsite

About The Position

Silana is building an automated garment assembly system that's redefining apparel manufacturing. As a seed-stage robotics company headquartered in NYC, we are deploying our first system with a launch customer in Europe this summer. The next 12 months are critical, and we are expanding our team. We are designing the next iteration of our assembly cell and require a technician to translate CAD drawings, wiring diagrams, and engineering intent into a functional machine. This role involves close collaboration with mechanical, electrical, and controls engineers throughout the build process, including frame assembly, component mounting, electrical wiring, pneumatic plumbing, power-on, debugging, and iteration. Additionally, the technician will manage the physical flow of parts, including receiving deliveries, verifying orders, organizing inventory, and identifying missing or incorrect items to prevent build delays. This is a hands-on builder role for someone who enjoys seeing a machine come together from raw components and schematics.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of hands-on experience building, wiring, or maintaining industrial machinery, robotics cells, automated equipment, or similar.
  • Comfortable reading mechanical drawings and electrical schematics.
  • Solid electrical skills including panel wiring, ferrules, terminal blocks, 24V DC and 3-phase, sensor wiring, soldering, and crimping.
  • Mechanical fluency with hand tools, power tools, torque specs, alignment, and basic machining or fabrication.
  • Experience with pneumatic systems.
  • Genuinely enjoys the build phase of a project, including troubleshooting fitting and wiring issues.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with garment, textile, or fabric-handling machinery, or the manufacturing and testing of other soft goods.
  • Comfortable with collaborative robots.
  • Familiarity with industrial control hardware such as Beckhoff, Siemens, Allen-Bradley (Beckhoff/EtherCAT experience is a strong plus).
  • Experience with vision system mounting and alignment (cameras, lighting).
  • Experience utilizing Arduino or ESP32 boards.

Responsibilities

  • Build and commission new cells from mechanical frame to fully wired, powered, and commissioned systems.
  • Perform mechanical assembly, including aluminum extrusion frames, mounting robots (UR series), actuators, sensors, custom fixtures, and pneumatics.
  • Conduct electrical work, including control cabinet wiring, EtherCAT topology, sensor and actuator wiring, cable management, and panel layout.
  • Install and manage pneumatic systems, including tubing, manifolds, valve banks, and leak-checking.
  • Support system bring-up and debugging alongside the engineering team.
  • Iterate on the cell design as it evolves, adapting to design changes.
  • Manage shop and supply operations, including receiving incoming deliveries (unpacking, inspecting, checking against POs and packing slips).
  • Flag damaged parts, short shipments, or incorrect items immediately and coordinate resolutions with engineering.
  • Organize and label inventory, including components, fasteners, electrical hardware, and tooling.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and orderly shop floor and storage areas.
  • Help keep BOMs and inventory records accurate as parts are received and consumed.
  • Surface low-stock issues before they become blockers.

Benefits

  • Direct, daily impact on a machine that ships to a real customer this summer.
  • A small team where what you build matters and your name is on it.
  • A real shop with real tools in NYC.
  • Compensation: $60,000 - $70,000 (year) base salary
