About The Position

Sonoco is seeking a Mechanical Designer to join a lean, high-impact, supportive team dedicated to transforming the manufacturing landscape. This role involves working closely with engineers or project managers to develop advanced manufacturing equipment, product testing equipment, and testing fixtures. The position offers the opportunity to experience the full equipment development cycle, from identifying customer needs to commercializing solutions. Sonoco is a $7.5 billion company with a rich history, located at its Corporate Headquarters in Hartsville, SC.

Requirements

  • A 2-year associate degree in a mechanical design-related subject
  • Proficiency in CAD modeling software (Autodesk Inventor is the standard)
  • Openness to learning and exploring better ways of doing things
  • Patience and ability to withstand the rigor of selecting and shaping design concepts through multiple design iterations
  • Open-mindedness and objectivity; willingness to listen to the reasonings and ideas of others without being too attached to one's own ideas
  • Good time management skills and ability to stay focused on the most important items
  • Enjoy working with an innovative team in an environment that supports and encourages meaningful innovation

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with and knowledge about AC motors and control, general electrical components/system control, PLC, electronics, etc.

Responsibilities

  • Working closely with engineers or project managers to develop advanced manufacturing equipment and testing equipment
  • Design fixtures to evaluate concepts and test them
  • Model designs and create detailed drawings for the designs
  • Work with engineers and suppliers to select effective components (Mechanical, electrical, and pneumatics, etc.)
  • Work with machine shops and suppliers to get all parts fabricated and components purchased
  • Work with technicians and engineers to assemble, test, and debug the equipment
  • Facilitate or lead field installation in production plants
  • Perform design improvement based on learnings from the field
  • Acquire/learn various fabrication techniques/methodology, material properties, component performance characteristics to help achieve a design with the most effective performance-to-cost ratio
