About The Position

The Mechanical Designer is responsible for producing accurate, fabrication-ready pipe spool drawings to support industrial pipe fabrication operations. This role works closely with project management, estimating, quality, and shop operations to translate contract documents, 3D models, and field information into detailed spool drawings that drive safe, efficient, and predictable fabrication. The ideal candidate has direct experience working in a fabrication environment and understands constructability, weld sequencing, material control, and quality requirements associated with industrial piping systems.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of experience as a mechanical designer or detailer in industrial piping, pipe fabrication, or structural fabrication
  • Hands-on experience with Navisworks for model navigation, extraction and coordination
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD for 2D drafting
  • Strong understanding of pipe spool fabrication practices, including welding, fit-up, and shop workflows
  • Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, isometric drawings, specifications, and project documents
  • Working knowledge of piping materials, fittings, valves, and supports
  • Strong attention to detail with a focus on accuracy and constructability
  • Effective communication skills and ability to work in a fast-paced, project-driven environment

Nice To Haves

  • Experience using Spoolfab for spool management and fabrication workflows
  • Experience with Tekla Structures, particularly for coordination with structural steel or modular assemblies
  • Familiarity with ASME piping codes (e.g., B31.1, B31.3)
  • Experience supporting modular or prefabricated piping assemblies
  • Exposure to ERP or digital production tracking systems

Responsibilities

  • Develop detailed pipe spool drawings and fabrication packages from 3D models, isometrics, orthographic and contract documents
  • Utilize Navisworks for model to extract spools per system.
  • Produce and modify 2D drawings using Spoolfab to support fabrication and shop needs
  • Generate spool sheets including weld symbols, material callouts, dimensions, tolerances, and notes consistent with fabrication standards
  • Coordinate with project managers, estimators, and shop supervision to ensure drawings align with priorities, schedule, fabrication sequence, and installation strategy
  • Incorporate field conditions, RFIs, and redlines into revised drawings as required
  • Support quality control efforts by ensuring drawings meet applicable codes, specifications, and internal standards
  • Maintain organized drawing files and revision control in accordance with project and company procedures
  • Participate in constructability reviews and prefabrication planning sessions
  • Assist with model-based takeoffs and material tracking as needed

Benefits

  • Competitive compensation and benefits package
  • Long-term growth opportunities within a fabrication-focused organization
  • Clear pathways for career advancement with autonomy and flexibility in an entrepreneurial environment
